Engaging discussions, valuable insights, and great networking moments made this event a success. 🔹 Day 1: Global, national & local drivers of the hydrogen economy 🔹 Day 2: SAF in Switzerland, H2 derivatives, biofuels, industrial decarbonization & hydrogen infrastructure 💡 Key Learnings: ✅ H2 reality check – Lessons from discontinued EU projects, but also a strong increase in mature projects reaching FID. ✅ Hydrogen is maturing – Positive signals show a shift toward realistic, scalable solutions. ✅ EU integration – Stronger connections to the EU electricity market, H2 backbone & aviation SAF quotas. ✅ Decarbonization mix – Biofuels are currently cheaper, but RFNBOs will gain competitiveness over time. ✅ System integration is key – Coordinating H2 adoption across sectors will be crucial. ✅ Switzerland moves fast – Despite a late strategy, the country is pragmatic in enabling eSAF production. 🌟 Exciting News from Smartenergy! 🌱 We were proud to participate in the Energy Strategy National Symposium, organized as part of the Twinning HEUROPE SALTOpower project. Coordinated by the University of Évora, in collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Italian Agency for Nuclear and Renewable Energy (ENEA), this initiative explored cutting-edge energy solutions. 🔬 Key Focus Areas Following the Regional Specialization Forums, the ESSymp brought together key regional and national stakeholders to discuss the potential of Molten Salt technologies in supporting the National Energy and Climate Plan. The event also highlighted opportunities for industrial development and technology export by leveraging existing and emerging capabilities. 💡 Smartenergy’s Contribution As a leader in energy innovation, we were excited to contribute to this critical discussion. Our Technology Strategy Director, Manuel Costeira da Rocha, PhD, was invited to share insights on Power Systems Planning and Design, particularly addressing the challenges of intermittency and seasonality in electrolyzer system design and operation. The discussion explored key topics shaping the future of SAF: ✅ SAF Project Development: Identifying success factors, from technological advancements to feedstock availability. ✅ Technology & Feedstock Options: Exploring scalable solutions to accelerate SAF production. ✅ Long-Term Offtake Agreements: Addressing the need for agreements beyond 1-2 years to ensure investment and supply chain stability. ✅ Financing SAF: Attracting balanced investment through debt, equity, and regulatory incentives like the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). A key challenge identified was balancing supply and demand certainty. Producers need long-term commitments to secure funding, while airlines seek pricing stability and supply assurance. Regulatory clarity, financial innovation, and strategic industry collaboration are essential to bridge this gap.
