We are thrilled to be a part of the #GESDASummit again this year, taking place at the CERN Science Gateway - an iconic venue promoting scientific outreach for all ages. A special thank you for inviting our young #VillarsFellows (changemakers between ages 13-19) into the conversations and for integrating them as rapporteurs to capture key ideas and perspectives from each session. We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator and look forward to sharing the full collection of rapporteur reports from the Summit soon. #ScienceDiplomacy #FutureLeaders #CERNScienceGateway

Professor Subra Suresh will speak today in the opening plenary of the GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator Summit. Professor Suresh recently delivered the Villars Institute #DistinguishedLecture on the topic of deep learning from nature and machines. By combining intelligence drawn from nature with advancements in AI and big data modelling, we can unlock powerful opportunities to innovate solutions for addressing the twin challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. This GESDA Summit brings together a diverse group of scientists, diplomats, policymakers, innovators, executives, and some of our young Villars Fellows, to explore the theme of "The Great Acceleration," and how science and its applications can help solve some of humanities biggest global challenges, such as climate change and biodiversity loss. We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with GESDA in highlighting the crucial role of science in developing solutions and guiding actions for our planet’s future, and doing so through intergenerational learning and collaboration. #ClimateChange #Biodiversity #ScienceSolutions #IntergenerationalCollaboration

A captivating first-hand account written by Polar and Ocean Explorer and Villars Institute Board Member Keith Tuffley, who shares the challenges and triumphs of navigating one of the most remote corners of the world – the legendary Northwest Passage: https://ow.ly/cUcY50TFppC Driven by a passion for and commitment to scientific discovery, Keith and his crew have completed their 17-week journey through six of the planet’s #tippingpoints, witnessing the rapid changes occurring in the ocean, the ice, and the land in the Arctic: a vital early warning system for planet’s health. The insights and data they have gathered are instrumental in shaping our understanding of the effects of climate change and guiding efforts to protect our planet. Supporting this historic journey of discovery to advance our understanding of the planet is a privilege and we celebrate Keith and the entire crew’s courage and commitment. Today is an historic day, marking the completion of a triumphant 17-week journey of exploration and scientific discovery! It is with great joy and admiration that we celebrate Villars Institute Board Member Keith Tuffley and his crew’s four month Ocean Science Expedition on a 75-foot Bermuda Schooner – the #AbelTasmanYacht – through the legendary Northwest Passage. They arrived at their final destination in Homer, Alaska, today. With skipper Isak Rockström and first mate Alex Rockström at the helm, the team set sail from Bergen, Norway, on 10 June 2024, and have since journeyed through six of the planet’s #tippingpoints, witnessing the rapid changes occurring in the ocean, the ice, and the land in the Arctic: a vital early warning system for planet’s health. Their mission? To gather breakthrough data to better understand the health of arctic marine ecosystems, bringing science to the attention of the global business and financial community, and by involving our young Villars Fellows thanks to satellite technology, informing and empowering both current and future generations to shift mindsets, raise ambitions and take meaningful action. Keith Tuffley explains more, with stunning footage from the journey. #OceanScience #NorthwestPassage #MarineEcosystems

While stories about climate change and biodiversity can evoke anxiety, powerful storytelling can transform these feelings into a sense of ambition and agency, especially #youth agency. Thanks to Swissnex in Boston and New York, we explored the importance and potential of #youth agency and storytelling in the “Climate Ring” during #NewYorkClimateWeek🥊alongside two incredible storytellers, Emily Renshaw-Smith from Open Planet on the power of film and visual narratives and Kamila Camilo from Instituto Oyá on amplifying local knowledge and wisdom together with #AI. A few takeaways: 👉Storytelling is a powerful tool for positive change – it transcends boundaries (generational and geographic) unites and builds bridges, evokes creativity, hope and courage, and helps the audience makes sense of complex issues. 👉Storytelling starts with connecting with yourself and your imagination, you need to be curious and go where the stories are. 👉Equipping children with the skills and tools, like Open Planet for effective storytelling isn’t just important – it’s a vital life skill. How might we inspire all generations to fall in love with the problem, and turn passion into action – not just to tell the story, but to change it?

Coming from 42 different countries, our growing community of 380+ Villars Fellows bring a range of knowledge and issues from their local communities to the discussions at the #VillarsSymposium. Elizabeth Yartey Quaye from Kokrobite Chiltern Centre, Age 14, shares her experience of how harmful fishing practices are devastating her community in Accra, Ghana, bringing attention to the interconnectedness of local and global challenges impacting both planet and people. #VillarsFellows #LocalCommunities #CommunityImpact

Tim Benton of Chatham House argues that innovating our food systems, to produce and consume the right foods in the right amount, would make radical improvements to both human health and the health of our planet. 🌍 Crafting shared narratives through #interdisciplinary collaboration is an essential part of the process, which can in turn foster more inclusive and sustainable economic models and policies. At the Villars Institute we celebrate the power of storytelling to capture imaginations, build bridges and drive meaningful change to the planetary crises that we face. By raising awareness and driving transparency and accountability, journalism is an important tool to influence the political will to take action. Rhett Ayers Butler, founder of the conservation and environmental science news platform Mongabay spoke to us about the power of platforming these stories.
