The Earth Prize 2024 Finalist Team Falcons shows us how fungi can enhance soil fertility in Central America! The story of Alex’s solution began when he was working at a farm in Nicaragua last summer. There, he had first-hand contact with depleted soils, a common issue many Central American farmers face due to harmful deforestation and chemical farming practices. After witnessing Juan, the farmer he was helping, worry about the lack of rain and the unaffordability of fertilizers as prices had doubled, Alex got to work to find a solution. A recent study from UNICEF USA surveyed 3,359 young people in 15 countries across Africa, Asia and North and South America and found that “more than half of these youth across the globe (57%) experience eco-anxiety“. This environmental anxiety stems from knowing they will face the escalating impacts of climate change throughout their lives, leading to a feeling of helplessness and uncertainty about where to begin tackling these pressing challenges. At The Earth Foundation, home of The Earth Prize, our mission is deeply rooted in the belief that everyone can make a difference. Every idea matters, and every perspective is valuable in driving change. Over the past three years, The Earth Prize has demonstrated that teenagers worldwide have incredible, innovative ideas to improve our world. We aim to provide them with the tools they need and encourage them to believe in themselves, showing that they can make a difference, regardless of age or background. We are proud to share the results of our latest survey from participants in The Earth Prize 2024: “95% of students feel more empowered after participating in The Earth Prize competition.” As we open the registration phase for The Earth Prize 2025 this September, we are excited to learn about the brilliant ideas young students have in store! #ecoanxiety #environmentalanxiety #theearthprize #tep24 #students #environment #climatechange
