Some records should not be broken.   As we celebrate the world’s sporting victories, our climate has achieved an unwanted personal best. On 22nd July, global temperatures spiked to their highest recorded levels in history, breaking a heat record set just 24 hours earlier. 🔥   This comes as unprecedented extreme weather events sweep large areas of the globe, with flooding, wildfires, typhoons and droughts bringing devastating consequences for people and nature.   Without urgent action to address the climate crisis, these extreme events will become more frequent and intense.    Through powerful and creative storytelling, we can share the realities of our changing planet as these events unfold, while also showcasing inspired climate solutions for a thriving, resilient future. 🌎   Start your story today ➡️ www.openplanet.org

Let's celebrate the incredible comeback of the tiger population! With tiger numbers up by 40% since 2010, our efforts with partners are making a real difference. Wild tigers have a crucial place in Asian landscapes and biodiversity, acting as both an umbrella and indicator species, protecting the wider ecosystem and indicating a healthy environment. Over the past 12 years, tiger populations have begun to rise in five countries – increasing for the first time in over a century. With effective, collaborative conservation, evidence shows tiger numbers can recover. As part of the solution, the Tiger Conservation Coalition (Environmental Investigation Agency, Fauna & Flora , IUCN, NATURAL STATE, PANTHERA, TRAFFIC, Global Environment Facility, Wildlife Conservation Society, Zoological Society of London (ZSL), WWF and UNDP) brings together leading biologists and experts in wildlife crime, human-wildlife coexistence, policy, finance, development and communications, with unprecedented alignment on achieving tiger conservation at scale. On #InternationalTigerDay, read about the comeback kitten and how we’re working with partners to secure their future: https://ow.ly/Xuij50SGIGX

The Peruvian Andes are home to over 70% of the world’s tropical ice glaciers, providing vital year-round water supplies to local communities by supplementing rainwater during the dry season. 💧 The region is strongly affected by climate change, with water security a growing concern. Shrinking glaciers and the increased intensity of extreme weather events are among major threats to local water supplies, coupled with pressures of rapid urbanisation. As our planet changes, visual storytelling can help bring to light the environmental, societal and cultural impacts of changing landscapes such as the Peruvian Andes. Indigenous communities in the Brazilian Amazon play a crucial role in environmental stewardship, with new research showing up to 83% less deforestation in areas under their protection. 🌳 Last year, we journeyed to the Amazon to capture the evolving story of the forest and the communities fighting to protect their home and livelihoods. The Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau Indigenous Territory has faced successive invasions from illegal loggers, farmers, and land-grabbers. We documented the Jupau Team’s surveillance missions to expose and record illegal deforestation activities using drones, smartphones and camera traps. This footage is part of a growing Amazon collection on #OpenPlanet, including data visualisations and interviews, to inspire new storytelling about this globally important region: https://lnkd.in/eyP4dsJx 🎥 SILVERBACK FILMS - Members of the Jupau Surveillance Team walk through deforested land. For the 760 million people in the world who lack access to electricity, the rise of renewables has the potential to power a connected, resilient future. 💡 New research from Ember shows renewables accounted for more than 30% of the world’s electricity in 2023, with wind and solar the fastest growing electricity sources in history. But if we are to deliver on climate targets for 2030, the global transition from fossil fuels to clean energy must accelerate further, while also bridging gaps in achieving equitable access for all. Doing so can unlock extraordinary benefits – creating jobs, boosting economies, and improving public health and air quality. 🙌 Through the #OpenPlanet library, we’re capturing inspiring footage of energy solutions to power new storytelling. New to Open Planet: unprecedented flooding in Nairobi tells the human story of climate change. Since the wet season began in March, Kenya has experienced some of its most devastating rains for years, with at least 23,000 people displaced, over 200 lives lost, and 2,000 schools affected. The climate crisis is causing extreme weather events such as flooding to become more frequent and intense, with the impacts disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable communities. We commissioned local drone organisation KENDRONE to film the recent flooding in Nairobi, to help capture events as they unfold. This new collection adds to hundreds of clips in our library helping to share the story of how climate change is affecting communities in and around the Kenyan capital – and how they are responding. Explore and use this footage in your storytelling ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eVCvZkfj #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ExtremeWeather #OpenPlanet #StoriesForChange
