Polar & Oceans Explorer and Villars Institute Board Member Keith Tuffley dialed in from Reykjavik, Iceland, to join the closing plenary session of the #VillarsSymposium. Keith is on a 4-month sailing expedition across the #NorthwestPassage for a journey of adventure, exploration and research which includes the first significant micro plastics collection data series across the passage from Iceland to Alaska. He talked about the importance of science and data collection and how research projects like this can help identify tipping points in climate change and biodiversity loss that will impact our Earth's ecosystems. #SystemsChange #Exploration #sustainability #biodiversity

🌿Recap of the closing plenary session: Accelerating Systems Change from Villars🌿 In the final session of this year's #VillarsSymposium, we looked ahead to the coming year with a direct focus on leading Systems Change and our Villars Fellows Community. Our Executive Director, Lee Howell, and Board Chair, Julia Marton-Lefèvre, led the conversation from Villars, while Polar and Oceans Explorer and Board Member Keith Tuffley dialed in from Iceland - part of a 4-month sailing expedition across the Northwest Passage to further research on the role the Arctic plays in our global climate system and biodiversity resilience. The #VillarsFellows made commitments to deepen their engagement with the Community and continue learning from each other, to participate and share perspectives in the annual #GlobalIssuesSurvey, and take individual actions to drive change. Topics covered in the lively and energetic discussion included: 🎯The importance of voice and action in systems leadership - and how changes, no matter how small, can make a big difference. 🎯Intergenerational communication and listening: key for all generations to undergo a mindset shift and learn a new culture of collaboration. 🎯How systems change and getting to net zero depends on being brave: taking action, making calls and then testing those calls. Recap: Putting Communities at the Heart of Nature and Climate Action 🌿👨👩👧👦 This plenary took some of its inspiration from the Global Issues Survey in which 33% of young respondents believed that a focus on planetary health would be vital to their career and even more to their daily lives in the near future. Hope and optimism, influence and collective action were the three key themes that emerged and underpinned the mission - how to put planetary health at the heart of everyday life. Five key commitments that emerged are: 🎯Enhancing the role of sustainable finance by using systems thinking to recalibrate humans’ relationship with nature. 🎯A fundamental shift in mindset - moving from independence and individualism to put nature at the heart of the communities. 🎯Leveraging tourism to bring sustainable development to remote communities. 🎯Conserving both wildlife and wild lands through community engagement and empowerment as well as conflict mitigation and conservation programs. 🎯Utilizing basic income to create a sustainable, poverty- free future. With Jaideep Bansal, Chief Executive Officer, Global Himalayan Expedition Impact Ventures GHE Jon Duncan, Chief Impact Officer, REYL Intesa Sanpaolo Dr. Krithi K. Karanth, Chief Conservation Scientist and CEO, Centre for Wildlife Studies Ussif Rashid Sumaila, Professor of Ocean and Fisheries Economics, The University of British Columbia, and co-recipient of the 2023 The Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement Moderator Jade Hameister, Youth Advisor, Villars Institute #PlanetaryHealth #NetZero #future #environment
