Remaking Trade For a Sustainable Future

When a hurricane approaches and hits, EVERYTHING stops for a while, and in some cases, more than just a while ... Reports coming in are that the smallest Caribbean islands of Union Island (in the Grenadines), Carriacou and Petite Martinique (sister islands to Grenada), Tobago (sister island to Trinidad) and bigger island Barbados have gotten the brunt of Hurricane Beryl that bore down on the Eastern Caribbean this Monday morning… and that the same Beryl is headed for Jamaica and Cayman Islands. Lord have mercy! This is no time for self-promotion, but I hereby recommit to work I am part of at the Shridath Ramphal Centre for Int'l Trade Law, Policy and Services (https://lnkd.in/ekyaS5GC), the Remaking Trade For a Sustainable Future Project, climate litigation and through other important initiatives, to bring trade rules and policies into alignment with the climate change agenda! My heart is breaking for my region. These painful reminders show that all of us—not just those in SIDS and climate-vulnerable economies—must work much harder to address the geographic and international governance systems (finance, trade, shipping) that cause and worsen these climate calamities. These disasters, and the threat of them, wreak havoc on our people and economies every year. The need for reform of the current system could not be clearer. Sending prayers up and best wishes out to all my colleagues, friends, MITP students and alum across the Eastern Caribbean. We will find ways to help but for the bigger lift, we will need more intention, clear-sighted focus, and all hands on deck! To provide assistance to Grenada, see comments below. St Lucian native and #VillarsExpert Jan Yves Remy, Director of the Shridath Ramphal Centre for Int'l Trade Law, Policy and Services (SRC), The University of the West Indies, knows first-hand how susceptible her island is to the ravages of climate change - and she’s using trade policy to try and alleviate it. In collaboration with Yale University Institute for the Environment and Tufts University, Remy is working on the Remaking Trade For a Sustainable Future, encouraging governments, policymakers, and trade organizations to think creatively about how #TradePolicy should interact with other systems of governance and put the planet at the center of the #GlobalTradingSystem. This week I had the opportunity to participate on Remaking Trade For a Sustainable Future event at Georgetown University Law Center. The event was organized by Center on Inclusive Trade and Development co-led by Jennifer Hillman and Katrin Kuhlmann. It was an honor speaking on behalf of ECLAC at the Panel on "Trade and Inclusion: Leveraging Trade as Tool for Social Development" alongside Gregory Shaffer and Nita Rudra from Georgetown University, and Paula Tavares from the The World Bank. We discussed how the multilateral trade system can and should incorporate the social dimensions (labor, gender, indigenous rights, etc) as a core objective in order to support countries achieve the SDGs. The event was sold out and featured representatives from IDB, WB, ODI, USAID, Walmart, Silverado Policy Accelerator, etc. and also included presentations by USTR Ambassador Tai and two US Senators. Congrats to Trevor Sutton, Lillie Steinhauser, Valeria Frigeri and Mario R. Osorio Hernandez for a fantastic event!
