Global trade reached a record $33 trillion last year, but uncertainty clouds the outlook ahead. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s Global Trade Update – now a monthly publication analysing trade policy and global trade data – examines tariffs and their impact on global trade in its March 2025 edition. Tariffs are an important trade policy tool, serving as a mechanism to protect domestic industries and generate government revenue. However, high import duties can increase costs for businesses and consumers, potentially stifling economic growth and competitiveness. The report also provides new trade data and projections across regions, industries and sectors, covering 2024 and early 2025. 🔗 Full report: https://ow.ly/SVi750VhZ7c

Today’s #WorldWaterDay celebrates the precious resource crucial to public health, industries and sustainable development. But globally, water systems are increasingly under strain from overconsumption, industrial pollution and the effects of climate change, putting some 2.2 billion people's well-being at stake. Tackling the challenges head-on, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) works with global partners to ensure that economic growth and sustainability can go hand in hand in water-stressed regions. Through the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution Programme (The SMEP Programme) – funded by the United Kingdom – 27 projects have taken root in Africa and Asia to help enhance water-efficient processes and waste management for sustainable production and consumption. This week at the UN in Geneva, I met with the Eurasian Economic Union to discuss the road to #UNCTAD16 in Viet Nam. The world is facing profound shifts in geopolitics, trade, technology, demographics, all of whom pose important challenges to developing countries deepening financial and development challenges. Developing countries need a global trade system that works for them, and UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) must be at the centre of that conversation. UNCTAD16 in Viet Nam is a great opportunity to emerge stronger, more flexible, and more impactful — by shaping the solutions countries demand. That means: ▶️ Better data and real-time insights to drive decision-making; ▶️ Stronger support for developing economies, including least developed countries in transition; ▶️ A clear strategy on trade including services, productive transformation, digitalization, critical minerals, and regional integration; ▶️ A practical agenda on illicit finance and financing for development; ▶️ A firm commitment to multilateralism that delivers results. These issues are not abstract policy debates — they affect jobs, communities, industries, and the global economy worldwide. At #UNCTAD16, we must set a course for trade and development that is ambitious, and fair. I look forward to working with all partners to make this a reality.

China led global ocean goods exports in 2023, shipping $155 billion worth of products, followed by Germany ($79 billion) and the United States ($61 billion). While most top exporters are developed economies, players from the Global South – including India, Mexico, Türkiye and Chile – are rising. Full data story: https://ow.ly/T7Bt50Vmfkr

Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific are deeply connected to global trade, offering both opportunity and risk. Today, I met with leaders from the African Caribbean Pacific group (ACP) in Geneva to discuss how we can strengthen their position in an evolving global economy. Many of these economies rely on trade for nearly 100% of GDP, far above the global average of 59%. With global trade reaching $33 trillion, there is room for growth — but also increasing volatility. Commodity dependence, shifting trade policies, and tariff pressures create uncertainty, but these regions also have strategic advantages: their size makes them agile, and stronger South-South trade can create new pathways to resilience. As we head toward #UNCTAD16 in Viet Nam, we have a chance to shape a trade system that better serves developing economies. The focus will be on practical solutions — policies that help governments, businesses, and communities navigate change while unlocking new opportunities. How do we make global trade work for sustainable development? This is our moment to find answers together.
