We are excited to announce the first industry talk of the Fall semester 2024, co-hosted with DAO Suisse DAO Throughput, Challenges, and Evolution by Daniel Ospina from RnDAO Date & Time: Tuesday, 24 September 2024 | 18:15 - 20:30 Location: KOL-E-18, University of Zürich, Rämistrasse 71, 8006 Zürich (Hybrid format via Zoom) Register here: https://lu.ma/h47hn3c1 Daniel Ospina works as an Instigator at RnDAO and Co-founder of TogetherCrew. His work focuses on decentralized governance, #DAOs, and progressive organizations, with a mission to Empower Humane Collaboration. At #RnDAO, a #DAO and research-led venture builder, the team researches, prototypes, and incubates collaboration technologies—tools designed for the governance and operations of progressive organizations. Talk Abstract: DAOs started as direct democracies. However, concerns about token holder engagement and decision throughput (poor adaptation capacity) led to their evolution into representative democracies. Despite this shift, DAOs face new challenges, including principal-agent problems, while low engagement and throughput remain persistent. In this talk, Daniel will explore various organizational experiments emerging across the DAO ecosystem. He will discuss how we can triangulate between these experiments, traditional #web2 corporations, and key theories from psychology, economics, and organizational science to map out better solutions for DAOs. Join us for an insightful evening on the future of decentralized governance. Info
Following a grass-root initiative by several Professors in 2017, in January 2019 the University of Zurich establishes a Competence Center on Blockchain. The aim of the center is: (i) to consolidate and coordinate the different research activities and fund raising, (ii) to structure and growth the educational offerings, and (iii) be single point of contact in the area with third parties and peer initiatives. This page will be continuously updated with the activities organised or linked to the UZH Blockchain Center.

Fantastic opening #Keynote by Prof. Tomaso Aste at the Blockchain Kaigi 2024 on the challenges of designing and understanding blockchain-based systems due to their inherent #Complexity
It was a great experience to give a keynote talk on governance in distributed systems at the excellent conference blockchain Kagi 2024 in Zurich at the UZH Blockchain Center https://lnkd.in/eSwXNYsi While preparing for the talk, I had the chance to revise research on self-organization in complex systems. The overall message I delivered is simple: complex systems are hard to govern because their behavior must emerge spontaneously from the rules and this is hard to predict. For P2P distributed systems, the problem is harder because the rules cannot be imposed. There are several examples of natural and artificial systems that managed to succeed in self-organization but they are the survivors from plenty of others that miserably failed. Distributed ledger technologies can help but do not solve the problem. Human cooperation requires more than just technical solutions; they involve ethical, cultural, and psychological factors.

🚀 We are excited to share that Carlos Alberto Durigan, a visiting PhD student at the UZH Blockchain Center, has published a book chapter titled "Perspective Chapter: The Web 3.0 – Brief Literature Considerations, Use Cases, Sustainability and Risks" in collaboration with Prof. Dr Claudio J. Tessone. This chapter has been published in IntechOpen. Abstract: This chapter explores some general definitions about Web 3 and blockchain technology, along with some applications. Moreover, it mentions definitions of related terms like DAOs. Additionally, this chapter presents some use cases, risks, and sustainability of Web 3. Final considerations and future perspectives are given at the end. We are thrilled to announce that Krzysztof Gogol, a PhD student at the UZH Blockchain Center, presented his paper at the 5th International Conference on Mathematical Research for the Blockchain Economy (MARBLE 2024) and won the Best Paper Award! 🎉 The paper, "Liquid Staking Tokens in Automated Market Makers," was co-authored by Robin Fritsch, Malte Schlosser, Johnnatan Messias, PhD, Benjamin Kraner, and Prof. Claudio J. Tessone. It offers a deep dive into the theoretical and empirical analysis of liquid staking tokens (LSTs) within automated market makers (AMMs). The research explores key aspects such as suitable AMM types for LST liquidity and the necessary trading fees to compensate liquidity providers. It also examines the profitability of LST liquidity compared to holding or staking the assets, with significant findings that challenge the sustainability of current LST liquidity practices.
