Congratulations to PhD candidate Qian Wang on successfully defending their thesis titled, “Three Essays in Financial Machine Learning”! Qian's research innovatively applies diverse machine learning techniques to critical financial questions within asset pricing. In the first essay, Qian examines empirical asset pricing in the Chinese stock market. By employing various machine learning algorithms to analyze a comprehensive dataset of return prediction factors, Qian discovers that market liquidity, influenced predominantly by retail investors, serves as the most significant predictor—unlike in the U.S. market. Impressively, the out-of-sample performance remains economically substantial, even after accounting for transaction costs. The second essay utilizes BERT, a cutting-edge language model, to evaluate the impact of climate risk disclosures on credit default swap (CDS) spreads. Qian’s analysis differentiates between transition and physical risks, revealing that disclosures of transition risks tend to increase CDS spreads following the Paris Climate Agreement, whereas physical risk disclosures generally lower them. In the third essay, Qian explores the predictive efficacy of technical patterns in financial markets through a combination of image recognition and news sentiment analysis. The findings underscore that technical patterns are still potent in contemporary markets, with notable disparities between the U.S. and Chinese markets. In the U.S., these patterns are most effective for firms with high momentum and substantial institutional ownership, whereas in China, smaller firms reap the most benefits.
