As our 'First Mile #Traceability' project in #Ethiopia came to an end, we sat down with Binyam Temesgen, Walter Matter’s Sustainability Coordinator in Ethiopia, to get his thoughts on this 18-month initiative, to explore the realities in the field and to evaluate the results.

We were delighted to take part in the launch of the Swiss Sustainable Coffee Platform (SSCP) in Bern. The Swiss #coffee sector is joining forces to promote a #sustainable coffee industry and is committed to creating value and equity along the entire supply chain. We strongly believe that SSCP’s multi-stakeholders’ model, which includes coffee traders, roasters, NGOs, academia and government representatives is the most effective way to tackle environmental, social and economic challenges through knowledge sharing and the pooling of resources. We warmly thank Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin for his support, as well as SECO team and the leadership of the Community of Interest Coffee Switzerland (CIC).
🌟 Thank You for Joining the Swiss Sustainable Coffee Platform Launch!🌟 A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended the launch of the Swiss Sustainable Coffee Platform (SSCP)! 🎉 Your presence, enthusiasm, and commitment to sustainability made this event truly memorable. We were honored to hear from Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin: " Our economic cooperation in partner countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, or Peru can achieve a significantly greater impact through closer collaboration with the Swiss private sector. And for our companies, the Swiss Sustainable Coffee Platform can make an important contribution to fulfilling due diligence along their value chain" Additionally, Swiss Coffee Trade Association President Nicolas Tamari stated: "Both the Swiss Coffee Trade Association and our member companies have been committed to promoting greater sustainability along the coffee value chain for years." It's inspiring to see such a diverse group of stakeholders—ranging from coffee traders and roasters to NGOs and government representatives—come together with a shared vision for a more sustainable and equitable coffee sector. ☕🌍 Let’s continue to drive positive change in the coffee industry, together! #SustainableCoffee #SSCP #Sustainability #ThankYou

The staggering levels reached by the #cocoa market lately may be welcomed for producers. However, for the trade and industry, it means tremendous challenges in the sourcing and financing of the beans. Such times reveal how crucial it is to have trustworthy partners and an open cooperation. We at Walter Matter truly believe that this is how suppliers and clients can weather together through this current storm.

We were delighted to take part in such an initiative, and we strongly believe that this #Agroforestry project is a key factor for the success of #SustainableCocoa in #CotedIvoire. Thanks to all project partners Storck, Ecookim, Foncier Foresterie Agriculture (FOA), IDH !
🌳 We're thrilled to share the success story of Ecookim's innovative premium mechanism driving transformative change in the cocoa value chain in the Wider Tai Forest Area in Côte d'Ivoire. IDH, together with Ecookim, a union of cooperatives based in Côte d'Ivoire, is taking significant steps to support agroforestry and reforestation activities, including transitioning 22 cooperatives to a more sustainable cocoa production model. 🤝 As the project nears completion, a groundbreaking solution emerged: a market mechanism involving private sector partners and cocoa buyers to finance agroforestry transition independently. IDH, together with Walter Matter SA, FOA, and Ecookim, crafted a premium tool to pre-finance agroforestry transition, focusing on finding a chocolate company willing to pay an additional premium for sustainable practices. These premiums directly finance on-the-ground implementation, setting a promising trend for sustainability across various value chains. Storck, a leading confectionery manufacturer, committed to paying an extra premium for cocoa beans from Ecookim's cooperatives, incentivising and financing agroforestry and reforestation. The first year was a resounding success! Storck extended premium payments for 2024 and increased the volumes supplied from Ecookim, demonstrating trust and commitment to the partnership.
