A Remarkable Restoration Journey in Etome Village. We are thrilled to share an update on Etome, our fourth water catchment project with SUGi . Situated between Mt Cameroon, Mt Etinde, and the Atlantic coast, Etome is home to biologically significant native forests. However, the area faced challenges due to land clearing and lava flows from Mt Etinde, causing rivers to dry up and ecosystems to deteriorate. In December 2022, we joined forces with the Etome Village Forest Management Committee and some youths from communities around the Mt Cameroon area to plant a forest that is breathing new life into the area already. Today, this remarkable forest is evidence to the power of restoration and community action. "Growing forests is an activity that should be conducted by every parent. Forests ensure continuity at least for us here in Etome. We don't know life outside of the forest," says Mr. Ekwalla Samuel, President of the Committee. Fast forward to 2023, the forest continues to thrive. In just less than 2 years, we've observed incredible progress, including: -Tallest tree reaching 2 meters in 2023 and Average surface temperature inside the forest at 26°C, compared to 29°C outside. -We have equally recorded a 96% survival rate across 7,000 planted trees from over 14 native species and the emergence of new species due to dispersal and routine clearing. Together, we have transformed a 2,330 square meter area into a thriving ecosystem. Join us in celebrating this remarkable achievement and the power of collective action! #Restoration #Sustainability #CommunityAction #SDGs #EtomeVillage #ClimateAction #Environment #Communities #TreePlanting

About us
Ecological Balance is an apolitical, non-religious, and nonprofit making organization that uses the environment as a tool for positive social change. We envision a world where every action is environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable for present and future generations. We belief that ecosystem conservation is most successful and sustainable if it is led by people living adjacent to it and if it contributes to their livelihoods. Hence we seek to balance conservation with livelihoods. Our mission therefore is to empower local communities to independently undertake actions that ensure long term sustainability of their adjacent ecosystems (including the human facet).

Nurturing healthy soils is crucial for the well-being of our planet and future generations. Soil health is interconnected with various aspects of our lives, including climate stability, water quality and food production. However, current data paints a concerning picture, with 75% of soils already degraded and affecting over 3.2 billion people. If left unresolved, this figure is projected to escalate to 90% by 2050. Thus, it is important that we come together to protect and restore our soils for long-term sustainability. Since our visit to Bih Village, we have been tirelessly brainstorming and collaborating to create tailored strategies to address the issue of soil infertility caused by eucalyptus plantations and intensive farming practices. Our goal is to empower these farmers by promoting sustainable farming techniques and improving soil health. We shall secure a more sustainable and prosperous future for Bih Village and its farming community. #sustainablefarming #soilhealth #Soil #communities #environmentalsustainability #environment #water #food

In the midst of the #globalclimatecrisis, there is an urgent issue that we can no longer afford to ignore: the plight of #climatemigrants. These individuals, who have been forced to flee their homes due to the devastating #impacts of #climatechange are often neglected in our conversations and actions. We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to their suffering while focusing solely on #climateaffectedcommunities. We must also shine a light on those who have already left their homes and ensure that organizations like ours take action to support them. Consider the plight of the mother, clutching her children close as she flees her home, now homeless due to the consequences of climate change. This heartbreaking and a reminder that climate migration is not just a concept by but a painful reality for countless families in #Africa and around the world It is our moral obligation to advocate for policies that address the unique needs of climate migrants and provide them with the support they so desperately desire.Through a collective voice we can advocate for policies that tackle the root causes of climate-driven migration and hold accountable those who exacerbate these issues. #Governments and #policymakers must enact comprehensive measures to support #climatemigrants, ensuring that they receive the same aid and resources as those affected by war, hunger, and other crises. As we confront this global challenge, we must acknowledge our responsibility to halt human-induced practices that fuel climate change. This means transitioning away from #fossilfuels, prioritizing #sustainabledevelopment, and protecting our #naturalresources and more. By doing so, we can help prevent further displacement of #vulnerable populations and mitigate the devastating impacts of climate change. #COP29 #ClimateMigrants #ClimateMigration #Climateaction #ClimateChange #UNFCCC

In the face of escalating social challenges caused by water scarcity in Cameroon's Northwest region, Ecological Balance Cameroon has steadfastly worked alongside local communities to drive meaningful change. For over a year, our initiatives have focused not only on regenerating water resources through tree planting but also on ensuring that these vital resources remain secure and easily accessible for all. In the Donga Mantung division, particularly in Nkambe, our concerted efforts have brought about significant progress. We have revitalized waterways, strengthening local resources and delivering clean water directly to communities. Our recent endeavor in the Nsakop neighborhood is a shining example of our work in action. By rehabilitating a once-dilapidated waterway, strategically planting trees around the catchment area, and making water more accessible and easier to fetch, we are helping to minimize potential risks and foster a safer environment for women and girls, who often bear the brunt of social issues like violence and sexual harassment, exacerbated by water scarcity. As we continue to partner with the people of Cameroon's Northwest region, Eco Balance remains committed to implementing lasting solutions that promote water security and address root causes of these pressing social issues, offering hope for a brighter, safer and healthier future for communities. #SocialImpact #SustainableLiving #EnvironmentalConservation #CleanWaterAcess #CommunityDevelopment #Empowerment SUGi Limbi Blessing Tata Sandrine Akeabeh Njiafu Benardin

True #conservation is a delicate balance between protecting our #natural #resources and #empowering the people who depend on them. While we work tirelessly to fight #deforestation, #restore #landscapes, preserve #biodiversity, #rehabilitate #waterways and #catchment areas etc in #Cameroon, We also recognize that these #communities rely on their #environment for survival. That is why our work goes beyond planting #trees. We endeavor to introduce alternative sources of income to help people transition away from practices that harm our #environment. By empowering communities especially #women and #girls, we are creating a ripple effect of positive change. Meet Neh Nicoline, a resilient mother of two from Oku, Northwest Cameroon, now resident in Great Soppo, a community in the Mount Cameroon Area. As one of the many women impacted by the crisis, Nicoline's life took a positive turn when she participated in a reusable menstrual pad training organized by Ecological Balance Cameroon under our Irvingia programme. Over three years later, Nicoline continues to be a champion of menstrual health, producing, using, and distributing reusable pads within her community. We recently had the opportunity to catch up with her and learn about her inspiring journey. Watch the video below to hear Nicoline's story firsthand. Many admire Nkambe's green vegetation, but a closer look reveals a concerning reality. The eucalyptus tree also referred to as "the thirsty tree", while native to Australia, has been introduced to many parts of the world, including Cameroon. In regions like Nkambe, it has become a significant invasive species. Its rapid growth and ability to thrive in diverse conditions has given it a competitive advantage over Nkambe's native vegetation. It has dominated the landscape, posing a threat to native ecosystems. While it appears vibrant, the thirsty invader has depleted water resources, hindered native plant growth, contributed to biodiversity loss and soil erosion. Through our #NkambeRiverRevivalForestProject, we are working hard to restore the balance. We're reintroducing native species to ensure a truly sustainable future for Nkambe. #Nativespecies #Restoration #ClimateAction #Nkambe #Cameroon

We recently visited Bih village in Donga-Mantug, Northwest Region, Cameroon, to hear firsthand the challenges faced by our farming communities. The stories we heard were heartbreaking. Over 50 farmers shared their struggles with us: Soil infertility caused by eucalyptus plantations and over farming has rendered their farmlands unproductive. The absence of proper fencing has exposed their crops to ravaging cattle, leaving them with little to harvest. To add, dwindling water resources and the lack of good roads is making it nearly impossible for them to transport their produce to markets, forcing them to sell their goods at distressingly low prices. A bucket of corn, for instance, is sold at 2000XFA ($3.30), a price that barely covers their production costs. All of this is hindering their ability to earn a decent living. The impact is devastating. With minimal income, these farmers are struggling to provide basic necessities for their families, including education. The dream of sending their children to school is fading rapidly. Our encounter with Bih farmers highlights the urgent need for a grassroots approach to environmental conservation. By understanding the specific challenges faced by these communities, we can develop targeted solutions that protect our environment while improving their livelihoods. Join us in advocating for sustainable practices and supporting our farmers. Together, we can build a healthier planet and stronger communities. Your support can make a difference!
