On 12 Oct 2024, we had our inaugural ‘CM Founders Club’ session held at Morrison Foerster's Shanghai office. Formally known as ‘CEO Training Sessions’, the rebranded half-day sessions are held quarterly for CM Venture Capital portfolio startup leaders to share updates/tips, discuss opportunities and brainstorm challenges. This is based on our ‘Build’ principle, which is part of our overall 4-step investment philosophy: Predict-Select-Build-Partner. External experts were also invited to the session for insight-sharing; with big thanks to Morrison Foerster, China International Capital Corp and 光禾作用 for their time and effort. Attending the event were leadership from BEAVER Biomedical Engineering Co.,Ltd , Sengong, Skysys Intelligent Technology, Echiev, ENWISE 倍奇能源, Guofu Hydrogen, CSMH, prismlab. Also attending the session were secondees and representatives from our partners Mitsubishi Corporation China and Phoenix Contact. One of our startups just won at the Climate Impact Innovations Challenge led by Temasek Foundation and East Ventures. Congratulations to ENWISE 倍奇能源, which develops on-site green energy plants to upcycle organic waste into biogas, for winning a $50,000 cash prize from Sinarmas Agribusiness and Food at the Climate Impact Innovations Challenge on 6 Sep 2024. The cash prize will be used to apply/optimize Enwise's tech to upcycle palm oil mill waste into usable bioenergy. By taking organic waste from palm oil mills, Enwise's tech can produce green natural gas for 100,000 Indonesian families. Nationwide, organic waste from the national palm oil industry could potentially produce enough green natural gas for 60 million families, reducing 7% greenhouse gas emissions for Indonesia. Collectively, ENWISE 倍奇能源 and CM Venture Capital would also like to personally thank Temasek Foundations' Li Lang Heng, Anders Soh, Charlotte Goh, as well as the East Ventures team for the opportunity to showcase groundbreaking clean-energy tech – and this is just an example of the many unique technologies that Dr Min Zhou has personally overseen and curated for the CM Venture Capital portfiolio. #cleanenergy #renewableenergy #climateimpactchallenge #organicenergy #bioenergy #foodtoenergy #organicwastetoenergy #biogas #greenbiomethane
ENWISE 倍奇能源 has received the Sinarmas Agribusiness and Food prize at the Climate Impact Innovations Challenge in Indonesia. We will use the fund to optimize Enwise technology for palm oil mill waste and work with Sinarmas to implement a full-scale unit. With the waste of a single palm oil mill Enwise can produce enough green natural gas for 100 000 Indonesian families, at the scale of Indonesia this would represent green natural gas for 60 million families and a reduction of 7% of the whole country greenhouse gas emissions. I would like to thank Jesslyne Widjaja Executive Director at Sinarmas Agribusiness and Food to have chosen Enwise. It is a huge honor for me and the company. I was happy to meet the SMDV team Pui Li Ho and Aditya Ichsandi Haris, all the Enwise team is looking forward working with you. A big thanks to Temasek Foundation team Li Lang Heng, Anders Soh, Charlotte Goh and East Ventures team, Avina Sugiarto, Ghivarly Addarquthni, Martin Tanuwijaya, Daniel Angga, Malavika Tandon. The Climate Impact Innovation Challenge was carefully crafted, and the mentorship sessions have been instrumental to understand how Enwise technology can maximize its impact in Indonesia. Thank you for your hard work. Thanks so much to Yingting LUO and all the Enwise team for their hard work and dedication. Last but not least a huge congratulation to all the other winners, your projects are amazing, and I am looking forward seeing their progress in Indonesia. With climate change, comes new ways to measure & manage environmental impact. In the materials cycle, this is particularly important, as there are carbon emissions from cradle to end of life. Our portfolio startup Econic Technologies Ltd has recently published an explainer on Life Cycle Assessments (LCA). LCAs can evaluate the environmental impact associated with all stages of a product’s life, from raw material extraction through to manufacturing, use, and disposal. By considering the entire life cycle of a product, an LCA provides a holistic view of its environmental footprint, helping businesses, policymakers, and consumers make more informed decisions. LCAs can support environmental stewardship, informed decision-making, transparency & accountability and cost savings. Econic’s LCA result is that their environmental impact is substantial, compared with standard materials/products – Econic's technology can help reduce the GWP (Global Warming Potential) by up to 40%. It shows that innovative technology, such as upcycling waste carbon into functional materials/products can indeed make a big difference to our world. #greenhousegases #greenhouseffect #carbontovalue #co2tovalue #globalwarmingpotential

Part of fighting climate change includes adapting with change. With more unpredictable weather patterns and harsher climates, a Silicon Valley-based CM Venture Capital startup, NovoNutrients, has an answer to ensuring food production security, while using up CO2 at the same time – basically turning renewable carbon into a high-quality protein. 🎯 The technology takes CO2 and feeds it to microbes in a proprietary reactor. These natural microbes – with help of green hydrogen and oxygen – convert CO2 into a high-value protein. Novotein™, the final product, consists of over 80% protein that is nutritionally as good as beef protein. 🎯 As it’s produced in a plant, not a farm, the protein production is unaffected or interrupted by climate issues or inclement weather. It doesn’t need vast amounts of arable land and requires much less water. In a nutshell, it saves resources, land, water and time. 🎯 For a start, Novotein™ by Novonutrients is being used as animal feed in aquaculture farms to replace traditional fish feed. Results have shown that Novotein™ helps lower operational costs by ensuring a better growth rate, deliver a higher feed-conversion-ratio (less food for more fish), elevating survival rates, and even improving the taste of the product itself. Novonutrients is led by CEO David Tze, while its breakthrough technology is fostered by its CTO Joachim (Jo) Ritter. We look forward to new developments in this exciting new space known as alternative protein, which may just eventually find its way to our dinner tables. Click below to read a short article by Novonutrients' CEO, who was in China in April this year as a speaker at our regular Innovation China Conference. #renewablecarbon #CO2toprotein #carbontoprotein #alternativeprotein #renewableCO2 #foodsecurity #climatechange
