  • What do you get when a brain surgeon teams up with a biomechanics scientist? Why, improved helmets, of course! Swedish company Mips have developed a safety system designed to add protection in helmets against rotational motion. The system’s main component is a low-friction layer imitating the brain’s own protection system. This enables a relative motion between the head and the helmet. Brainy stuff indeed! 💡 The Mips solution is based on decades of research and development at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. It all began in 1995, when Hans Von Holst, a brain surgeon at Karolinska, started examining how standard helmets were designed, convinced that the helmets generally available were not providing enough protection against brain injuries. 🚫 He went on to contact KTH with the view to launch research into head and neck injury prevention. This eventually led to Peter Halldin, at the time a KTH student, starting his doctorate on the biomechanics of injuries to the head and neck. In 1996, the von Holst–Halldin duo presented their idea for the Mips solution. • Sweden takes equality seriously. And it is no accident that we have been ranked as the second-best country in the world to be located if you are a woman. 🥈 This ranking is from The Economist ’s annual glass ceiling index, which assesses where women have the best and worst chances of equal treatment at work in OECD - OCDE countries. The 2024 index sees Iceland in the top spot, and Norway, Finland, and France rounding out the top five. The Nordics continue to walk the talk on helping women complete university education, secure employment, and rise to senior positions, with policies that provide quality parental-leave systems and flexible work schedules a critical factor in driving equality in the labour force. Gender equality benefits the economy, business, and individuals – let's continue to break that glass ceiling together! ⚒ 👊 Photos: 1. Margareta Bloom Sandebäck/imagebank.sweden.se 2. The Consulate General hosted a reception yesterday at Fairmont Peace Hotel to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Gothenburg-Shanghai Sister Port Agreement in the context of the new iteration of the joint agreement signed at the North Bund Forum. We were honored to have welcome speeches from Amb. Marie-Claire Swärd Capra, Consul General of Sweden in Shanghai, Mr. YU Fulin, Director General of Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, and Mr. Göran Eriksson, CEO of The Port of Gothenburg, as well as Mr. Claes Sundmark, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Port of Gothenburg, in attendance. 🌟 The Agreement, established in 1994 by the Port of Shanghai Authority and the Port of Gothenburg AB, has facilitated a mutual exchange of experiences and ideas, enhancing the development of both ports. 🚢 The Port of Gothenburg has been a central link in Sweden’s trade with the world. As Scandinavia’s largest port, it handled 36.3 million tons of goods in 2023 and is a leader in #sustainability, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by 70%. Today, it serves 140 destinations worldwide and is directly connected to numerous #climate-friendly transport operations across Europe. Since its founding in 1620, the Port of Gothenburg has played a prominent role in Sino-Swedish trade relations. 🌏 In the current era, reliable trade flows are vital to global growth. The strong collaboration between the Port of Gothenburg and the Port of Shanghai plays a crucial role in increasing maritime traffic, boosting trade, and advancing our shared goal of #greentransition. We extend our warmest congratulations to Port of Gothenburg, the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission and Port of Shanghai on this milestone. 🤝

  • Fashion production is one of the heaviest polluters, accounting for up to 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. How can we manufacture clothes without destroying the planet for future generations? 🌍 Swedish fashion studio Atacac has a solution: digitalizing every step of the production process reduces climate impact bit by bit – from initial design to finished product. 🌿 This film is part of a series made by the Svenska institutet and Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design). Producer: Note (design studio); Director of Photography: Carl Engberg.

Very interesting conversation last week with representatives of Swedish industrial heavyweights LKAB and Trelleborg Group, Anders Lundgren Chief Sustainability Officer at LKAB, and Jackie Huang Managing Director at Trelleborg Marine & Infrastructure China, joined by James Wu Managing Director LKAB Trading & President LKAB Minerals China, and Crystal Li, Project Leader on Sustainability also LKAB, and Per Portén Market Manager China at Business Sweden, about current market situation and prospects. All noting that today's global market situation is complex but not without upsides. LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is a state-owned Swedish mining company, mining iron ore at Kiruna and Malmberget in northern Sweden. The company was established in 1890, even if today's international mining and minerals group historically began with extraction in 1740. LKAB has processing plants for industrial minerals and representation offices in a large number of countries, including Finland, UK, Netherlands, Turkey, China, Germany, USA, Slovakia, Greece, Spain, and South Africa. Through LKAB, the largest manufacturer in Europe and leading in highly refined iron ore pellets, Sweden is one of the European Union's leading ore and metal-producing countries accounting for over 80 % of the continents produced iron ore. Swedish company Trelleborg AB is a world leader in engineered polymer solutions that seal, damp and protect critical applications in demanding environments with an emphasis on innovative engineered solutions that accelerate performance in a sustainable way.
