📢 The Court of Justice of the European Union issues important judgment on the processing of sensitive data by #socialmedia networks under the #GDPR “An online social network such as Facebook cannot use all of the personal data obtained for the purposes of targeted advertising, without restriction as to time and without distinction as to type of data” The Court of Justice of the European Union issued an important judgment on 4 October 2024 concerning the processing of sensitive data (or special categories of personal data) under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including inter alia data concerning sexual orientation, by social networks without the data subject’s consent. It is important to note that the processing of special categories of personal data revealing racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, or trade union membership, and the processing of genetic data, biometric data for the purpose of uniquely identifying a natural person, data concerning health or data concerning a natural person’s sex life or sexual orientation is prohibited under the GDPR, unless one of the exemptions described in article 9(2) of the GDPR is applicable. #dataprotection #dataprivacy #Chrysostomides #lawfirm #Cyprus Stefanos Charalampous from our firm presents the facts in his article on this milestone judgement 👇

GDPR Made Simple: Safeguarding Privacy in the Digital Age On behalf of our firm and #dataprotection team, Alexandra Kokkinou, Senior Associate, delivered a tailored training session to one of our insurance sector clients on the obligations of insurance companies under the General Data Protection Regulation (#GDPR), and other applicable legislation. The training included an introduction to the GDPR, the role of insurance companies as data controllers, and practical examples. Last week I had the pleasure to represent Chrysostomides Advocates & Legal Consultants at the Lex Mundi 2024 Bank Finance & Regulation Practice Group meeting which took place in Athens, Greece.   The event was hosted by the Greek member firm Zepos & Yannopoulos and their Finance team shared with us insights on the provision of lending in Greece, including on the Consumer Credit Directive 2, CRD 6 as well as the tax aspects of lending in Greece vs Europe.   Guest speakers included Christos Gortsos (Professor of Public Economic Law of the National Kapodistrian University and President of the Academic Board of the European Banking Institute) who delivered a very interesting keynote speech on the legal aspects of the #digitaleuro, the central bank digital currency proposed to be introduced in the euro area. In addition, Vassiliki Lazarakou (Chair of the Hellenic Capital Market Commission and member of the IOSCO Board) discussed about the key elements of recent #ESG legislative measures, including the #CSRD and the disclosures and obligations of companies in this fast-growing regulatory landscape in view of Europe's goal to become #carbonneutral.   Thank you to Lex Mundi as well as to Paris Tzoumas and his team for organising such a fantastic event and for the opportunity to meet and reconnect with colleagues from law firms around the world.
