#Energystorage events are the best! Why? In my (not entirely unbiased) view, the storage industry features a very unique blend of appealing characteristics that make each conference and exhibition so interesting. 1) Mature but still pioneering: Parts of the storage sector (such as utility scale, lithium-ion battery storage) have already reached a quite advanced stage and deal with extremely interesting next-level optimization topics. Other parts (such as "long duration energy storage" and thermal storage) are still shaping their role in the flexibility game, with a lot of exciting questions around technologies, frameworks and monetization still to be solved. Overall, despite a mind-blowing growth and evolution over the last years, we are far from reaching "storage peak" - the best is yet to come. 2) At the heart of the energy transition: Energy storage provides the flexibility to enable the overall energy transition, not only in power but also heat and transport. Hence, when being active in energy storage, you automatically take a comprehensive view and also closely follow the trends in, e.g., renewables, heat pumps and e-mobility - seeing the big picture of the energy transition evolving is extremely fulfilling. 3) Great people: Here I am certainly biased, but the energy storage community is just awesome. A great mix of people representing a diverse set of players - from startups to large corporates, from upstream materials producers to asset owners, from tech firms to investment banks. Curious, open and fun-loving. I was reminded of all of this when attending the Energy Storage Global Conference in Brussels (#ESGC2024) for the last two days. Thanks a lot Patrick Clerens of EASE - The European Association for Storage of Energy for having me moderate a panel with the flashy title "Big and Rare Events = Big Money. The Most Profitable Storage Markets, the Best Way to Optimize Your Revenues." And thanks to Moritz Rolf and Oliver Schmidt for being such great panelists.
