Guiding Principles for #Sustainable Solar PV Systems in #Ethiopia’s Social Institutions (SIs) Under Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Energising Development (EnDev) project, MicroEnergy International developed a comprehensive framework to enhance the #sustainability of photovoltaic (PV) power systems in #Ethiopia's social institutions. This #framework provides key guiding principles that address critical aspects like: -#Policy and #legal structures -#Organizational and administrative best practices -#Business models and financial planning -#Technological standards -#Environmental and social impacts Rather than a one-size-fits-all solution, this framework offers adaptable principles covering all essential processes—from planning and equipment selection to installation, maintenance, and eventual replacement. It draws from global best practices, in-depth studies of local PV systems, and insights from solar electrification initiatives in Ethiopia. Follow SWARM-E project to keep updated about the progress of this game-changing ambitious project!
💡 DID YOU KNOW THAT…💡 🌍Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) accounts for 85% of the population living in energy poverty, the same 660 million people who lack access to electricity are also the most vulnerable to climate change, where one-third of the world's droughts occur. 🔌⚡The fact that millions of people lack access to electricity creates instability in the food supply chain and makes it difficult to access clean drinking water which together have a direct impact on the educational, economic and health prospects in the region.💧 🍽️For example, more 1.8 billion people lack access to clean cooking technologies and fuels as a sign of their energy poverty. 🚰Finally, women and young girls spend about 40B hours per year transporting water, a figure which corresponds to a full year of labour by a European nation’s entire workforce. 🤝⚡United by the common goal to find a solution which would create and maintain affordable and sustainable access to clean energy that leaves no one behind and meets the energy, water and food productivity needs of all users in communities in the SSA, European and African research institutions and private sector have joined forces in this project to pilot SWARM-E - a circular and bottom-up renewable energy infrastructure that links SWARM grids (dynamic, smart, and flexible interconnected solar home systems that allow for renewable energy trading and income generation) with other renewable energy generation and storage assets (solar mini-grids, solar containers, water purification).⚡ 🤩Follow us to keep updated about the progress of this game-changing ambitious project! In the past weeks, Bangladesh has witnessed historic change. The resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, following a powerful student-led anti-discrimination movement, has opened the door to a new era. An interim government—the fastest in Bangladesh's history—has been formed to restore stability, led by none other than visionary Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank and visionary leader of Grameen Group Dr. Yunus' words resonate deeply: “For too long, Bangladesh’s politics have been backward-looking. Starting today, let us focus on building a future together that springs from the second liberation that occurred on August 5th.” We are filled with optimism and excitement. The newly formed interim government, with its strong commitment to climate action and entrepreneurship, is expected to attract international donors and investment. This is the time to accelerate the development of Bangladesh. PS: the picture in the post is taken by Daniel Philipp in 2002 in Bangladesh.

The Ethiopian government is targeting universal electrification by 2025 through NEP 2.0, boosting Solar Stand-alone Systems in remote areas. However, rural social institutions still face challenges in accessing reliable solar PV systems. To tackle this, under Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Energising Development (EnDev) project, MicroEnergy International developed a comprehensive Sustainability Framework for the provision, operation, maintenance, and end-of-life management of these systems. The project began with a detailed Baseline Study, covering crucial topics such as the target audience of the framework, definition and dimensions of sustainability of decentralized electrification of social institutions with PV systems, and key principles and approaches for sustainable off-grid solar PV electrification of social institutions. This includes integrated participatory and need-based planning, design principles, procurement concepts and tenders, installation work, sustainable operation and maintenance, and end-of-life management and system replacement. The baseline study includes practical guides like "How to size a Stand-alone Solar System?" and a helpful checklist. Advancing Sugarcane Irrigation in Eswatini using Solar Energy! MEI conducted an important workshop as part of the feasibility study investigating the use of solar energy in irrigation systems for small-scale sugarcane growers in Eswatini. The workshop saw the participation of key stakeholders in the project, highlighting their active engagement and commitment. The project aims to assess the solar energy needs of small-scale cane growers in Eswatini with the purpose of solarizing their irrigation systems to reduce GHG emissions by replacing carbon-intensive imported electricity with clean solar power. The workshop featured discussions on stakeholder cooperation and policy mechanisms, insights on quality infrastructure development, financial recommendations, and capacity building. 🌍💡 United Nations Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN) #SolarEnergy #Sustainability #Irrigation #Eswatini #GreenTech #ClimateAction

Peer-To-Peer Grids - Electrification through Swarm Grids MicroEnergy International is glad to announce the SWARM-E project, a trans-disciplinary partnership co-funded under the European Commission /CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency Horizon program, in which we will demonstrate Swarm Electrification in two leading rural electrification countries, Tanzania and Rwanda. The project entitled "Leave No One Behind: Bottom-Up Energy Transformation of Last-Mile Communities Swarm-E" Energy transformation can be achieved through decentralized, decarbonized, digitized and democratic grids based on renewable energy technologies. Sustainable, modern, clean and affordable energy access for all should be a citizen's right, and not a goal. Let's swarm together! We look forward to sharing more updates as we progress!
