When you look back at the past few days—just watch the successful landing of Firefly’s Blue Ghost on the Moon—wow! Space is as exciting as ever. And yet, regardless of how fun and cool it looks, space remains hard. Incredibly hard. In the realm of innovation, setbacks and failures are natural; but they become invaluable opportunities in the hands of resilient minds. This is why we seek and select ony highly dedicated individuals whose strong personal motivation aligns with our team's relentless drive to shatter boundaries. In his podcast, international space recruiting expert Richard Joyce (Co-founder of EVONA) took a deeper dive into this philosophy and its backgrounds with our CEO, Sebastian Klaus to talk about personal resilience, the role of experienced leadership in the founding story of ATMOS and its four co-founders. This one’s for the early birds: As we near our first test flight* of PHOENIX 1 this spring, German ZDF featured us alongside Nicola Winter, #ESA reserve astronaut, on their science and tech show ‘moma future’. For those who weren't up at 5:43 AM this morning (and Mom!), we've linked the feature in the comments (German language) 👩🚀 Thanks Anton Jany and team for the visit and the report from our workshop Lichtenau! *Correction on the mentioned landing site: the planned reentry site for #PHOENIX 1 is the Indian Ocean. #ZDF #ATMOS #momafuture #PHOENIX

Only weeks away from the First Flight of our #PHOENIX capsule, it’s time to talk about - literally - one of the hottest topics out there: RE-ENTRY 🔥 Welcome to the ATMOS' Science Corner 👩🏻🔬 Handling the extreme temperatures and pressure conditions of atmospheric re-entry is one of the biggest challenges in our work. Let us take you through it: When our PHOENIX return capsule enters Earth's atmosphere at about ~7800 m/s (> Mach 20!), it is exposed to intense heat and pressure. The blunt design of our capsule and our very large cross section create a detached bow shock a few centimeters from our heat shield, generating a wide subsequent flow of plasma surrounding the capsule that protects it from destructive heat. FIRST 3 MINUTES OF RE-ENTRY Within the first 3 minutes of re-entry, our heat shield reaches a peak temperature of (only) ~1000 °C, while temperature in the plasma around it exceeds 20,000 °C. As PHOENIX descends into lower altitudes of the atmosphere, it uses air inlets to lead boundary layer air into our hot air compressors, allowing us to pressurize our Inflatable Heat Shield to ensure shape stability throughout all stages of descent. FIRST 10 MINUTES OF RE-ENTRY Within the first 10 minutes of re-entry, our spacecraft dissipates 99% of its kinetic energy, decelerating to subsonic velocities. Afterwards, it descends further through the lower parts of the atmosphere without any parachute for a soft and safe landing in the ocean. HOW WE GOT HERE Exploring the limits of what is physically possible to deliver the most cost- and payload-efficient return solution drives us to continuously advance the design of our PHOENIX' core technology and materials. Extensive evaluation campaigns, including thermal material testing, plasma wind tunnel trials, atmospheric drop tests and a series of system level environmental tests, have prepared PHOENIX for the extreme re-entry conditions within a record time of only 12 months. PHOENIX is GO for launch 🐦🔥 🚀 Launch Window for the Bandwagon-3 mission: NET April 2025 #ATMOS #Space #Reentry #PHOENIX #EngineeringMarvels

Today, we are very excited to announce that ATMOS has secured €13.1 million in funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator, a key program of the European Union’s Horizon Europe framework (the total sum is distributed as follows: EIC grant of €2.5 million, €5.3 million equity from the EIC fund, and €5.3 million in private equity). The #EUeic Accelerator strategically supports companies developing high-impact innovations 🇪🇺 This investment enables us to expand our engineering and testing capabilities, accelerating the development of our #PHOENIX 2 capsule. Alongside our participation in #ICARUS, a European Commission-backed consortium developing inflatable heat shields for rocket stage recovery, this milestone reinforces Europe's commitment to building sovereign space logistics as a crucial part of its growing infrastructure. For more details of this announcement, please find our press release in the comments below. We want to thank our partners, and the incredible ATMOS team for making this possible. Step by step, we are reshaping the future of space re-entry and logistics! 🌍✨ #ATMOS #EuropeanUnion #EICAccelerator #SpaceLogistics #PHOENIX #SpaceTech #EUFunding European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) Marta Oliveira Sebastian Klaus Christian Grimm Jeffrey Hendrikse
