BIOMEND - Doctorate Network

👨🔬 👩🔬 Allow us to introduce the Doctoral Candidates (DCs) who make up the BIOMEND - Doctorate Network. The DCs involved in the Network were present at #BIOMEND's recent semi-annual meeting at IMDEA Materials Institute. 3 of the candidates, Vittoria Squartecchia, Alex Mainguy and Kiarash Mashoufi, will undertake their projects in collaboration between IMDEA Materials and Meotec GmbH under the supervision of IMDEA's Prof. Javier Llorca and Dr. Damien Tourret, and Meotec's Simon Pöstges. The remaining DCs include João Cruz, Simon S., Diego Blunda, Anastasia Panagi, Alessandra Di Lorenzo, Mariana Rodrigues, Maike Bittner, Marius Thiel, Seán O Connell, Jan Sygor and Amr Fathy. Before next week's consortium meeting, we are honored to present a newcomer in our team, who will be working on preclinical trials: Anastasia Panagi 👩🔬 "Hi everyone! I'm Anastasia, excited to join the team! I hold a bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Cyprus and a Master's in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Patras. My passion lies in molecular biology, and I'm eager to apply my knowledge while expanding my focus in a new direction. 🚀 As part of the BIOMEND project, I’ll be contributing to the preclinical validation of the prototypes manufactured by the rest of the team, using histology. During my research, I'll be working closely with Prof. Martijn van Griensven at the MERLN Institute and implant pathologist Prof. Dr. med. Benita Hermanns-Sachweh from industry. I'm thrilled to explore how my field connects with medical device development and to collaborate with brilliant young scientists. As the days grow brighter, so does our team!💡 We're thrilled to introduce a valuable addition to our group of PhD students: Amr Fathy. 🙌 "Hello, my name is Amr. I completed both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering at Cairo University. My Master’s research focused on developing a novel analytical model to assess the mechanical behavior of balloon-expandable coronary stents, giving me valuable insights into stent mechanics and simulations. As a PhD candidate in the BIOMEND project, my research will focus on the development of a bioabsorbable endovascular stent for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. 🧠 While current treatments rely on stents combined with long-term antiplatelet therapy, my goal is to design a bioresorbable stent that reduces this dependency, improving patient outcomes. This involves designing, prototyping, and optimizing wire-braided stents using bioresorbable metal alloys, ensuring their performance in brain vessel models. Exciting Milestone! 🚀 Hi everyone, Diego here. I’m thrilled to share some of the work I’ve been doing, which is about developing a Finite Element Method (FEM) model for the crimping and free deployment of a coronary stent, provided by B. Braun Group. Why is this important? Coronary stents are manufactured and crimped onto an angioplasty balloon, which is then inflated to restore blood flow. My FEM model (see video) simulates this process, offering key insights into the mechanical behavior of the stent during these procedures. An in-house experiment was also conducted on the actual device. The ultimate goal? To integrate this model into a geometrical optimization framework for designing next-generation bioabsorbable coronary stents. 🔬 Also, I had the incredible opportunity to attend my first conference as part of the BIOMEND team, where I presented my research and connected with experts from various fields of biomedical engineering. The conference, Bioengineering in Ireland (BinI), is an annual event organized by the Bioengineering Section of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland (RAMI). It brings together researchers, engineers, and clinicians to discuss the latest advancements in biomechanics, biomaterials, medical device design, tissue engineering, and more. 💡 This was an amazing experience, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next. ⛳ Time to meet Seán O Connell, the golfer who develops bioresorbable urethral stents! “Dia dhaoibh a chairde! My name is Seán, and I’m a graduate of Biomedical Engineering from the University of Galway, where I obtained both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. My thesis primarily focused on the design of a novel device to optimise ischemic stroke intervention. Throughout my time at university, I developed a keen interest in medical device design and computational modelling, specifically Finite Element Analysis. Outside of the realm of research, I am an avid golfer, which can be difficult living in the West of Ireland! My research for the BIOMEND project involves the design and development of a bioabsorbable urethral stent for the treatment of urinary disease. This involves the optimisation of the stent design and corrosion performance using Finite Element Analysis. I am eager to put all that I have learned to the test in order to potentially improve patient outcomes and more importantly, people’s lives! I am thrilled to work with the University of Galway and Hydrumedical S.A., along with my fellow DCs, on this challenging yet rewarding project!" It's Friday! Time to introduce all of you to our anastomosis specialist: Mariana Rodrigues! 🙌 "Hi everyone! I'm Mariana, I have a Bachelor's in Biotechnology and a Master’s in Biomedical Materials and Devices from the Universidade de Aveiro, where I focused on smart biocomposites for tissue engineering.    My interest in interdisciplinary research led me to BIOMEND, where I’m working with Fibrothelium GmbH, the Uniklinik Köln, and BioTex (RWTH Aachen University) to develop bioresorbable microsurgical devices for vascular anastomosis without the use of sutures. Today is Valentine's Day, making it the perfect time to present our heart expert: Maike Bittner🫀 "Hello, I’m Maike, and I’m excited to share an insight into my PhD project. I’m working on a bioabsorbable stent graft for the treatment of traumatic aortic injury. Before joining BIOMEND, I completed my master’s in Medical Engineering at FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences. Through internships and my thesis, I already had the opportunity to work with bioabsorbable metals such as magnesium and zinc. I’m excited to work with the University of Galway and Fibrothelium GmbH on this project, which hopefully has a positive impact on people’s lives and the field of endovascular medical devices. As PhD candidates in the BIOMEND project, we—Vittoria, Alessandra, Maike and Mariana—are proud to be part of this change.
