🚨 Don't miss the first HERA project newsletter, where you can find out about this exciting project's purpose, goals and key technologies. 🛫 The Hybrid-Electric Regional Architecture (#HERA) project is working to develop the next hybrid electric regional passenger aircraft with the aim of reducing emissions by up to 90%. IMDEA Materials Institute is excited to participate in this European-wide initiative, with our research focused on developing a multidisciplinary approach to enhance the comprehension of metal machining. Our objective? To develop material and numerical methods that can be employed for the predictive simulation of machining processes. The expected outcomes of this work are twofold: providing fundamental contributions to material modelling and simulation of thermomechanical processes under severe conditions, while also implementing technological improvements in simulation tools and predictive capabilities in machining processes. IMDEA Materials' research on the project is led by Profs. Ignacio Romero, Carlos González and Javier Segurado, alongside postdoctoral researcher Dr. Christina Schenk and predoctoral researchers Radouan BOUALLALA and Gabriel Zarzoso Bueno. 🤝 IMDEA Materials Institute has discussed extending the scope of future collaboration with the University of Science and Technology Beijing (#UTSB) during a visit from the institution earlier this week. As part of the visit, IMDEA Materials was pleased to welcome UTSB's President, Prof. Yang Renshu, along with a delegation of university representatives. An open discussion on how the IMDEA Materials and UTSB can strengthen ties included the possibility of student and teacher exchanges, as well as an exploration of possibilities for joint participation in future projects. The visit was led by IMDEA Materials Deputy Director, Prof. Jon Molina, along with Senior Researchers, Prof. De-Yi Wang, and Dr. M Teresa Pérez Prado, and included representatives from the institute’s administration including Manager, Covadonga Rosado, our Human Resources and Financial Managers, Rosa Bazán and Mar García, as well as our Director of Projects and Technology, Miguel Angel Rodiel. 🏫 Founded in 1952, USTB is one of the top universities in engineering and science disciplines. In the 2024 QS World University Rankings, USTB was ranked 23rd among Chinese Universities, while its metallurgical engineering discipline has been ranked number 1 by the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects in recent years. 🔬 Traditional metallurgy has long relied on dominant base metals, but a new paradigm is emerging - one that embraces alloys with high entropy (#AHEs) or High Entropy Materials (#HEM) to unlock novel alloys with superior properties. This week, we highlight the review article, "From high-entropy alloys (#HEAs) to alloys with high entropy: A new paradigm in materials science and engineering for advancing sustainable metallurgy". 👨🔬 It was authored by Prof. Jose Manuel Torralba and Dr. Alberto Meza from IMDEA Materials Institute, former IMDEA researchers Drs. S Venkatesh Kumaran and Ahad Mohammadzadeh, alongside Dr. Amir Mostafaei from the Illinois Institute of Technology. The study explores: ➡️ The transition from HEAs to AHEs and their implications in materials science. ➡️ How the high entropy of mixing, stacking fault energy (SFE), lattice misfit, and anti-phase boundary energy (APBE) parameters shape alloy design. ➡️ The critical role of multi-component scrap and electronic waste in reducing dependence on critical metals. ➡️ The integration of AI-driven tools for data generation and optimisation in sustainable metallurgy. By shifting the focus from conventional alloy compositions to performance-driven design parameters, this work proposes a new alloy design framework that connects microstructure, manufacturing, and composition for more efficient material development. "I'm glad to contribute to this novel field, which can be crucial for the circular economy of highly alloyed metallic families," says co-author Dr. Meza. "Shout-out to the rest of co-authors for their excellent work". Published in Current Opinion in Solid State and Materials Science, this research paves the way for sustainable and high-performance metallic materials.
