👏 The annual #IRIDISCENTE project meeting wrapped up at ArcelorMittal in Avilés yesterday afternoon, with the sun breaking through the clouds for just long enough to grab a quick photo of the team behind this ambitious research effort! The meeting was a wonderful opportunity for the many IRIDISCENTE partners to meet and hold face-to-face discussions on the current state and future of the project. Yesterday's afternoon session saw a continuation of the final work package presentations, while attendees were also provided the opportunity to visit some of ArcelorMittal's additive manufacturing R&D facilities. We would like to thank all project partners for their attendance and participation, with a special thank you to the team from ArcelorMittal, in particular, David De Castro Mazariegos and Laura del Río Fernández for their outstanding organisation of the event. Several IMDEA Materials researchers were present in the institute's role as co-coordinators of the project, including Profs. Jose Manuel Torralba and Javier Segurado, Drs. Damien Tourret, Alberto Meza and Eduardo Roque Rodríguez, along with Sama Safarloo and Mohammad Zarghami. It is only onwards and upwards from here for IRIDSCENTE in 2025! 🤝 The #IRIDISCENTE project is currently celebrating its second annual meeting at ArcelorMittal R&D in Avilés. Today's morning session saw presentations related to the project’s ongoing work in the development of data-based machine learning models for the value chain of new materials, as well as the application of the project’s safe and sustainable by design (#SSBD) strategy, among a host of topics. IRIDISCENTE aims to develop a digital methodology to automatically and intelligently design, process and characterise new safe and sustainable metallic materials with improved properties, through the efficient flow of data along the material value chain, establishing the basis for the effective industrial use of Artificial Intelligence (#AI) technologies. Those presenting in the morning’s session include David De Castro Mazariegos and Miguel Carmody Rodríguez, Patricia De La Fuente Gamero, Israel Carreira-Barral, Santiago Muiños Landin, Víctor Gonzalo Cristóbal, David N. and Andrea Trapote Fernández. IRIDISCENTE is co-coordinated by IMDEA Materials Institute and ArcelorMittal and includes partners AIMEN Centro Tecnológico, the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, the Universidad de Burgos, TheNextPangea S.L., Renishaw, Blesol Tech, AENIUM , IDAERO SOLUTIONS, ALFA MIMtech and SYSPRO. The meeting continues this afternoon with additional presentations and a visit to ArcelorMittal's research and development facilities.

💡 IMDEA Materials has unveiled its inaugural internal Proof-of-Concept (PoC) call, #Materialise 2025, an ambitious initiative designed to address one of the most significant challenges in the journey from research to market: the so-called “valley of death.” Backed by €50,000 in funding, and support from external consultants and assistance from IMDEA Materials’ Technology Transfer and Innovation Office, this program aims to de-risk early-stage research by developing its commercial potential and transforming it into practical applications or commercial products. The ultimate goal is to enable pathways such as spin-offs, license agreements, and partnerships, strengthening the Institute’s position in technology transfer. 🔬 Recent advancements in #thermoplastics within the #polyaryletherketone (#PAEK) family have enhanced additive manufacturing (AM) potential in fields like aerospace and defence. #Polyetheretherketone (#PEEK), the best-studied PAEK, faces limitations in AM due to its fast crystallisation, which causes poor inter-filament bonding and warping. This study from IMDEA Materials researchers Lucía Doyle, Javier García Molleja and Juan Pedro Fernandez Blazquez, alongside colleagues from AIMEN Centro Tecnológico, investigates alternative, slow-crystallising PAEK polymers: polyetherketoneketone (PEKK-A) and AM-200, a PEEK-based copolymer. The article, highlighted in Polymers MDPI, also features the work of researchers Xabier Perez Ferrero, Ricardo Losada and Pablo Romero Rodríguez. 👏 IMDEA Materials Institute would like to recognise the work of researcher Blanca Limones Ahijón, who recently completed her First Year Assessment (FYA)! 👩🔬 Blanca is part of our Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine research group, led by Dr. Jennifer Patterson, where she is a member of the IMDEA Materials team on the #CARDIOBOOST-CM project, coordinated by CNIC - Spanish National Center for Cardiovascular Research / Centro Nac. Investigaciones Cardiovasc. as well as the #BIOMET4D project (EIC Pathfinder grant no. 101047008). Her FYA was focused on research related to the CARDIOBOOST-CM project, more specifically, the development and characterisation of self-assembling #hydrogels based on Low Molecular Weight Gelators (LMWG), evaluating their mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and suitability for cell encapsulation, as well as identifying challenges such as hydrogel stability and cell viability. These findings are directly linked to the ultimate goal of creating tailored biomimetic hydrogels for tissue engineering applications, particularly for supporting the survival and proliferation of stem cell-derived #cardiomyocytes. This cell differentiation strategy is currently being developed by CARDIOBOOST-CM, funded by the Comunidad de Madrid. Find out more, here: https://lnkd.in/dqF4Mvpb 🙏 We also thank Dr. Juan Pedro Fernandez Blazquez from IMDEA Materials and Dr. Silvia Martin-Puig from the CARDIOBOOST-CM project and the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas de Madrid - CSIC for serving as key readers.
