Chaired by Tristan Osborne MP, there were interesting discussions around the challenges with the UK’s education system and opportunities presented with a thriving games industry; - Opportunity to ‘revolutionise the way children learn through play’  - Need to design an education system/curriculum for diverse learners - Explore why 33% of pupils fail GCSEs in the UK - Incorporate a more culturally inclusive curriculum - Identify why BAME and neurodiverse pupils are 18months + behind their peers - How to equip pupils with skills to thrive in the creative industries  What support do innovative EdTech and gaming studios need from government to remain a world leader? And more fundamentally what is the purpose of education? and how can we nurture lifelong learners, ensuring we design an education system and curriculum for every learner style. Recently, our founder Reedah El-Saie was invited by Innovate UK Business Connect to mentor female founders in Kenya as part of Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa’s #MoreThanAWoman initiative. Mueni Kioko, co-founder behind multi-award winning Zaoshinani, transforming agricultural industries, by empowering local farmers, through technology and financial services Fiona O., solo founder behind multi-award winning, Gyno Care Hub, a sexual & reproductive health clinic in your pocket, for women & girls in Africa. Championed & supported by Basil O. Malaki, the UK-Kenya Health Global Innovation Network lead. This transformative programme is empowering grassroots women innovators in South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya, equipping them with business planning and pitch training to scale their solutions and drive meaningful socio-economic impact. By amplifying their voices through storytelling and investment opportunities, #MoreThanAWoman is championing diversity, inclusion, and sustainable innovation across Africa. With no expectations they embarked upon an amazing journey of self discovery! Day 1: Getting to know each other, thinking about role models, business personas & characteristics needed for success. Working on a personal development plan, we considered future personal and professional goals. Day 2: in the Nairobi Kitchen, we discovered blockers; isolation of being a solo founder, managing co-founder relationships, balancing investor expectations, recruiting/retaining the right team & the challenges of bootstrapping! Day 3: walking in Karura forest, beautifully conserved and litter/plastic free, we explored optimising personal strengths and unlocking potential. Interesting to hear perspectives on being private, modest and introverted, whilst owning your femininity/authentic personality traits, championing yourself, identifying allies and the importance of story telling. I encouraged Fiona to speak to several random girls/women in the forest and it was incredible to see the level of interest from end users and how this increased her own confidence, demonstrated product demand/enhanced product features. Day 4: driving to one of Mueni’s local dairy/coffee farmers, it was fascinating to experience the time consuming, manual process of local farmers, contributing to the agricultural industries in Kenya. Seeing the impact of Zaoshanini in action was mindblowing! Day 5: at Nairobi Museum, compliments of Mueni's inspiring mother, we wrapped up with high level business plans, marketing/fundraising strategies & personal targets! We are excited for their startup journey! Reedah ended the trip visiting the mountain gorillas in Bwindi Forest, Uganda. Being close to nature, away from technology, and having time for reflection was just what she needed! Our Founder, Reedah El-Saie, was honoured to share her ‘personal growth journey’ alongside inspiring portfolio companies @Michael Walker and Andrew Woods. Resilience, grit, focus, passion, networking and adopting a “can do approach” was key to success. The energy, dynamism, and creativity were kicked off by Dr Susanne Coles all part of a shared vision to work together to accelerate UK business growth and scale. Looking for Growth Hunters! Although many are concerned about Smart Grants being paused, Lisa Hazelden committed to understanding and developing new packages for innovators in Spring. Scale Up Nation Some of the most experienced and dynamic scale up directors & senior execs working across diverse industries were on hand to help! Delyth Lloyd Edwards from the British Business Bank cast a spotlight on funding more businesses across the UK, with 84% outside London. Josh Bean (Investor at BGF) and Marc d'Abbadie (Head of Venture and Executive Director at River Capital) said there was still investment out there, with larger cheques for fewer businesses. Giles Moore of Par Equity only invest in North England.
