Around 125 hand-picked guests from our community came together last week to contribute to an evening of inspiration, connection and collaboration - a true reflection of what chemstars is all about. With 34 innovative startups, 19 industry-leading corporates, 16 forward-thinking investors, and a wealth of dedicated ecosystem enablers and subject experts, it was incredible to witness so many bright minds under one roof (or on deck!). 🛥 💡 A special thank you to everyone who shared their insights and extended their personal networks. You helped foster an atmosphere where people engaged openly and authentically – regardless of strategic fit or potential business deals. Team Ucaneo just secured an impressive €6.75 million Seed Round! 🎉 The funding round is co-led by Smart Energy Innovationsfonds (SEIF) by Energie 360° and IBB Ventures with participation from new and existing investors Plug and Play Sustainability Fund, The Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, Carbon Removal Partners, Nucleus Capital, Apprecia Capital, and notable angels including Flixfounders (Jochen Engert) and Pjotr van Schothorst.   The newly secured capital will accelerate Ucaneo to build one of the largest DAC testing and development facilities in Germany as well as developing their first industrial product supporting the company’s mission to remove 0.5 GT of CO2 from the air by 2035 - roughly the same weight as all humans on earth combined or ~1% of global annual CO2 emissions! Ucaneo's state-of-the-art electrochemical technology mimics the human lung and how CO2 is managed in the human body. Utilising electricity and a specialised biomimetic solvent, Ucaneo removes atmospheric CO2 at continuous regeneration at room temperature, concentrating CO2 into a pure gas ready for industrial use. The DAC technology is highly energy-efficient and compatible with variable intermittent renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy, allowing for energy price arbitrage and a flexible, on-demand CO2 removal. Their technology is proven in the lab. Supported by an extensive TEA and an external third-party feasibility study, Ucaneo’s technology can achieve costs of just below €300/tCO2 already in the upcoming years, making it one of the cheapest DAC solutions in the world. In the long-term Ucaneo targets a removal price of below €100/tCO2. By 2026, Ucaneo aims to have their first industrial-sized product in place at one of the largest DAC testing and development facilities in Germany proving performance and scalability. This will be part of their first project supported by the Milkywire Climate Transformation Fund, where Ucaneo was chosen as 1 of 13 suppliers from over 220 Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) suppliers. What an incredible day at the Henkel Inspiration Center in Düsseldorf! On Monday, we celebrated the Grand Award Event, marking the thrilling conclusion of our From Lab to Market Challenge ideas competition. 🌟 🎉 It was a day of celebration as we recognized the achievements of the eleven early-stage teams who pitched their groundbreaking chemistry-related business ideas, showcasing the innovative spirit and creativity that drives our industry forward. Congratulations to all teams who participated and pitched their ideas on stage. There was some truly amazing progress visible from when we first met them for our Business Model Workshop back in April. 👏 A big thank you goes out to our advisory board member Alexander Troemel for his opening keynote, Arianna Savini, Johannes Velling, Adilson Arli Da Silva Filho and Karl D Collins for joining Martin Bellof on stage to talk about open innovation in the chemical industry and Maximilian Spiekermann and Max Krause from Simplyfined for sharing their progress since last year´s From Lab to Market Challenge.
