Info
Elea Technology is the leading supplier of Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) Systems to the food, beverage and scientific sectors. We design, build and install PEF equipment suitable for a wide range of applications and outputs. Elea’s highly qualified team of scientific and engineering experts deal directly with our customers to create new PEF process applications tailored to suit their specific needs. We can take your concept from an initial idea, through research to final production. With cutting edge food physics, chemistry and microbiology laboratories alongside unrivalled pilot hall facilities, Elea offers new opportunities to create new processes, products and to measure value. Our ability to evaluate process, ingredient performance, and end product stability enables the successful implementation of new technology. This is demonstrated by the commercial adoption of PEF with more than 125 Elea systems installed worldwide since 2012. Elea Pulsed Electric Field systems bring positive and dramatic changes to manufacturing. Improving output, reducing energy and labour costs, streamlining supply chain logistics, shortening process times and curtailing retail waste. The result of a Pulsed Electric Field treatment is electroporation, the pore formation in cell membranes of fruit-, vegetable-, tuber- and bacteria cells. PEF is able to restructure raw materials such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots and cassava which provides new shapes and product opportunities and enhances process optimisation in the snack production. PEF improves the extraction rates of juices, sugars, colours and other active substances, it increases yield and dramatically lowers water usage. PEF inactivates microorganisms in liquid products such as juices, smoothies and purees which significantly extends shelf life, enabling better production planning. Low-temperature processing preserves nutrients, colour and flavour. All of this results in cost savings and higher product quality.

👩🔬 Time flies! This week, we say goodbye to our student Sarah Staperfeld, who is completing her master’s degree in biotechnology at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremerhaven. From October to the end of March, she worked with us on her master’s thesis, focusing on the disruption of yeast cells using PEF technology. Her research builds on the HePro2 project, which explores the development of a physical process for extracting, processing, and characterizing brewer’s yeast proteins—where PEF (Pulsed Electric Fields) plays a key role. The project is highly relevant in light of the growing global population and increasing awareness of environmental and animal welfare issues, driving the demand for protein-rich foods from alternative sources. The HePro2 project is supported by funds of the Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft (BMEL) based on a decision of the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany via the Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung (BLE) under the innovation support programme. It is being implemented in collaboration with Elea Technology GmbH, Leiber GmbH, and DIL Deutsches Institut für Lebensmitteltechnik e. V. 🌟 Sarah, thank you for your great work! We wish you all the best in your future career. #yeast #eleaPEF #innovation #electroporation #PulsedElectricField

👩🔬 Meet our intern, Elizabeth Ryan! Originally from Boise, Idaho (USA), Elizabeth holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with minors in Mathematics and Biology from York University, Nebraska. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Biomolecular Sciences at Boise State University, which is collaborating with FOOD PHYSICS GROUP, and is with us till the end of March 2025. 🥛 Her research focuses on applying Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) technology to dairy proteins. PEF, a cutting-edge non-thermal processing technology, has shown promising results in enhancing the physical properties of various protein sources. Elizabeth’s project aims to improve physical properties of dairy proteins with PEF technology while characterizing the effect on protein structural properties. This research has the potential to impact the dairy industry in its recent objective to become more sustainable, while also making more favourable products for consumers. It’s been a pleasure having Elizabeth on our team, and we’re excited to see where her research takes her next! #electroporation #eleaPEF #dairyproducts #pulsedelectricfield
