📢 New paper alert! 📢 Multi-omics analyses of the environMENTAL project provide insights into mental health and disease. Integrative analyses that incorporate different levels of ‘-omics’ data represent a powerful tool for deciphering the biological mechanisms that underlie environmental influences on mental health and disease. This Comment highlights various aspects of such multi-omics approaches, using the environMENTAL project as an example. 📕 You can read more at: https://lnkd.in/eQdxWjuU Sylvane Desrivieres | Abigail Miller | Carina Mathey | Xinyang Yu | Di Chen | Kofoworola Agunbiade | Stefanie Heilmann-Heimbach | Per Hoffmann | Markus Nöthen King's College London | LIFE & BRAIN | The University of Bonn

Reducing the impact of major environmental challenges on mental health
Info
The environMENTAL project will investigate how some of the greatest global environmental challenges, climate change, urbanisation, and psychosocial stress caused by the COVID-19-pandemic affect mental health over the lifespan. It will identify their underlying molecular mechanisms and develop preventions and early interventions. Leveraging cohort data of over 1.5 million European citizens and patients enriched with deep phenotyping data from large scale behavioural neuroimaging cohorts, we will identify brain mechanisms related to environmental adversity underlying symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and substance abuse. By linking population and patient data via geo-location to spatiotemporal environmental data derived from remote sensing satellites, climate models, regional-socioeconomic data and digital health applications, our interdisciplinary team will develop a neurocognitive model of multimodal environmental signatures related to transdiagnostic symptom groups that are characterised by shared brain mechanisms.

🔍 Working with large cohorts and need to harmonize data?🔍 In the environMENTAL EU Project, we present a high-level protocol for data harmonization within large cohorts! We propose four key steps for data harmonization: (1) Expert review, (2) Pre-statistical harmonization, (3) Statistical harmonization, and (4) Validation. 📌 Want to learn more?
