It’s out! The Council has adopted the regulation to establish a framework to ensure a secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials, better known as the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). On behalf of EIT RawMaterials, partners and members of the European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA), we once again thank and recognize the leadership of the European Commission in establishing this visionary Act. We stand ready to partner and build the European raw materials ecosystem of the future. This week, the European raw materials sector marked a significant milestone with the Council’s approval of the ground-breaking Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) into legislation. The finalized text identifies 34 critical and 17 strategic materials crucial for green and digital transitions, defence, and space industries – and sets out three key benchmarks for EU raw materials consumption: 10% from local extraction, 40% processed within the EU, and 25% from recycled materials. To achieve these targets, the CRMA sets out criteria for strategic projects, requires Member States to appoint single window mechanisms and clear deadlines for permitting, and requires national exploration plans to ensure access to critical raw materials.
