Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE – Sustainable solutions for the plastics of tomorrow!
Info
The Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE on the way to make the plastics value added chain circular, to extract fewer fossil resources, to make products smarter, and to reduce end-of-life losses. The switchover from a linear to a circular plastics economy only succeeds with a multi-stakeholder approach. To this end, we are researching systemic, technical, and social innovations – over the entire life-cycle of plastic products. Fraunhofer CCPE combines the knowledge of six Fraunhofer Institutes: Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT, Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP, Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT, Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML, Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF and Fraunhofer-Institut für Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung IVV.

🏆 Recyclable mono-material sandwich structures win innovation award The Fraunhofer ICT has won the first place in the category Research and Science at the Innovation Award of the AVK- Industrievereinigung Verstärkte Kunststoffe! 🎉 Congratulations to our Fraunhofer CCPE Institute and to the team led by Sascha Kilian and Anna Krüger, who received the prize for the “Processing of recyclable mono-material sandwich structures in large-scale production processes”. The award ceremony took place as part of the company's 100th anniversary celebrations. The innovation opens up new possibilities in #lightweight construction and contributes to sustainability by enabling the reuse of materials and reducing the need for new petrochemical plastics. Innovative processes enable the production of components from just one material based on the multi-morphology approach - ideal for applications in the mobility industry as well as in sports and leisure products. We are delighted to be involved in this development together with the Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Polymerforschung IAP! 🌍Closing new loops with recycling – Study for Interzero ♻️ Recycling is not just a trend; it is a crucial strategy for protecting our resources. A recent study by Fraunhofer UMSICHT, a CCPE institute, commissioned by Interzero, highlights the significant impact of #recycling on climate protection. In 2023 alone, Interzero recycled approximately 2.5 million tonnes of materials, avoiding 1.2 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, over 11.1 million tonnes of primary resources were saved. For over 15 years, Fraunhofer UMSICHT has been analysing the environmental benefits of recycling for Interzero. Their annual life cycle assessments confirm that recycling is crucial for sustainable living and economic activity in Germany and Europe. Dr. Markus Hiebel, Head of Sustainability and Participation at Fraunhofer UMSICHT and leader of the CCPE Research Department "Circular Logistic and Sustianability, explains: ‘Our studies provide a strategic basis for decision-making on sustainable action and expertise in the transformation process towards a circular economy.’ Let's keep closing the loops!
