H2Avia analyses hydrogen's aviation potential from production, aircraft integration to global fleet carbon footprint.
Info
Hydrogen as an energy carrier for civil aviation is currently one of the most attractive technological. Ultimately, the question of whether and how clear the advantage of transport aviation with hydrogen is for the climate impact has not yet been conclusively answered. The evaluation of the necessary aspects from the production of hydrogen to the technological system components in the aircraft and the overall aircraft design to the climate balance on a fleet basis is carried out in this joint project in four coordinated work packages. The issues of hydrogen production and transport as well as logistics at airports are being investigated in work package (WP) 1. In parallel, WP 2 identifies relevant & open technology modules that are necessary for the introduction of hydrogen as a primary energy carrier and then analyses their effects on propulsion, systems, fuselage and wings in detail. This allows the technology selection for the different aircraft configurations to be made in WP 3 and an overall aircraft design with reference aircraft for each class to be developed. Finally, these concepts will be evaluated and summarised in a technology roadmap for further development steps. WP 4 summarises the results of the previous WPs into an overall balance of hydrogen in aviation with an estimation of fleet and fuel consumption, the non-CO2 effects as well as a life cycle analysis for a fleet in the considered aircraft classes. H2Avia is a research project funded in the scope of the German federal aviation research program (call VI.2) based on a decision of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
