𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗲-𝗠𝗮𝗵𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 The competitiveness of the European and German economy in times of geopolitical shifts was the central theme of this year’s Matthiae Mahl, the world’s oldest documented banquet, held in Hamburg’s historic Town Hall. Hamburg’s First Mayor, Dr. Peter Tschentscher, emphasized the city’s strong economy, citing record employment and high demand for investments. However, he acknowledged that Hamburg, like the rest of Germany, is affected by economic downturns and shifting global conditions. The event’s guest of honor, Teresa Ribera, has been the First Executive Vice-President of the European Commission since December 1, 2024. She is responsible for competition policy and coordinates energy, climate, and environmental matters. Her key challenge is balancing three objectives: achieving climate goals, enhancing industrial competitiveness, and ensuring a socially fair transition to a green economy. Prof. Dr. Monika Schnitzer, Chairwoman of the German Council of Economic Experts, addressed Germany’s economic challenges and opportunities. She warned that despite global recovery, German exports are struggling due to increasing foreign competition. While international companies prioritize software, AI, and customer-driven innovation, German industry remains focused on traditional engineering. “Not only are our products expensive, but they are also no longer attractive enough,” she noted. She highlighted five key areas where Germany and Europe must take action: • Strengthening competitiveness • Securing energy • Modernizing infrastructure • Driving digital innovation • Building new trade partnerships Hamburg plays a key role as an innovation leader, with its strong foundation in research, technology and international networks. photo (c) Senatskanzlei and Sibylle Helms (Hamburg Invest)
