We’re not just funding growth-we’re fueling it.

Info

Helena Capital is a growth venture capital firm investing in female-led tech companies that have achieved strong revenue traction through proven, innovative AI/software-enabled technologies and are at an inflection point of global scaling, most often transatlantic. Female-led* companies generate 35% higher ROI and 12% more revenue than their male counterparts, offering a unique investment opportunity, however, fewer than 5% of female-led companies make it to Series B. We are particularly passionate about bridging this funding gap for startups making an impact on the world's biggest problems in climatetech, fintech, healthtech, or deeptech (robotics/AI).

🚀 Female Founder Fridays: Meet Benjamina Bollag – Innovating Health with Uncommon Science “Health is everything,” a mantra Benjamina Bollag‘s father instilled in her from a young age. Starting with a vision to create healthier, antibiotic-free cultivated meat, she founded Uncommon. Now, her passion pushes Uncommon onwards, with plans to expand into drug delivery, cell therapies, and more, harnessing the full potential of cell science. 🌟 Rebranding From the start, the team knew they were building something beyond just meat. Their original name, “Higher Steaks,” reflected their initial focus, but as the company’s vision expanded, so did their brand. The Uncommon brand now captures their approach to building a healthier world. This means deeply exploring the uncommon and underlying power of cells' ability to adapt and solve real health issues that we all face. 💡 Breaking Misconceptions Cellular agriculture often raises eyebrows. “There’s a misconception that it’s unsafe or strange, but people don’t realize the real dangers of traditional meat production,” Benjamina explains that many underestimate how factory farming exposes consumers to harmful antibiotics and unsanitary conditions. In contrast, Uncommon’s cultivated meat is cleaner, healthier, and safer. As awareness grows, more people see this as the future of food. 🚀 Funding Challenges Fundraising posed one of the biggest hurdles. Without an established track record or much experience, Benjamina recalls reaching out to hundreds of investors before securing key backers like Sam and Max Altman. That pivotal moment opened doors and brought increased attention to the Uncommon team. 🎯 Lessons Learned One unexpected challenge was the amount of legal knowledge Benjamina needed in such a regulated industry. “I had to learn all the jargon just to keep up with discussions,” she admits. For founders in similar scenarios, she advises understanding how you learn best. For her, it’s through people—having trusted experts and being able to bounce ideas off her network. 🎉 Proudest Moments Achieving critical cell density milestones, which were key to meeting funding requirements, was a major step for Uncommon. “I’m not sure it’s my proudest moment, but the relief we felt is what brought it to my mind,” Benjamina explains. Another highlight? Tasting their product and seeing it improve with each iteration. Now, the team eagerly anticipates Uncommon’s first commercial sales and strategic partnerships. 💪 Advice for Aspiring Founders “There’s always risk, no matter what you do,” Benjamina says. “So go for what you love.” Whether your idea is big or small, passion and motivation make the risk worth it. ✨ Join the Conversation We’re thrilled to feature Benjamina Bollag and Uncommon in this week’s Female Founder Fridays. Share your thoughts and follow their journey. #redefiningVC #femalefounders #womeninVC #Innovation #BioTech #HelenaCapital #FemaleFounderFridays #FemaleEntrepreneurs

Female Founder Fridays: Meet Liberty Foreman – Turning Light into Life-Saving Insights "Don’t trust everyone." This harsh lesson from Liberty Foreman, Founder and CEO of Sierra Medical, has shaped her journey. Though she’s waiting for the right moment to share her whole story, it's evident that her mission to revolutionize healthcare has required immense resilience. Sierra Medical’s B2B SaaS platform uses infrared spectroscopy to detect biochemical changes that signal disease. 💡 From Academics to Business Liberty’s journey began with her PhD in infrared spectroscopy—a technology that’s transformed many industries but is still lacking in healthcare. Sierra Medical is changing that. Their platform provides labs with quick, affordable insights into sample compositions, fitting into the diagnostic puzzle and making early detection more accessible. 🚀 Resilience is Key While Sierra Medical’s technology is cutting-edge, Liberty’s journey hasn’t been without setbacks. Early on, she learned the importance of trusting the right people. Coming from a scientific background, Liberty sought business guidance from others but had to learn that, unfortunately, not everyone is trustworthy. She faced disappointments with team members, advisors, and even investors. Despite these challenges, she found strength in those who believed in her vision, helping her to rebuild and push forward. 🎯 Proud Milestones A major milestone for Sierra Medical was securing a grant from the EIC Accelerator program. "As a small company, getting the maximum grant was huge," Liberty says. Additionally, Sierra Medical is gearing up for a multi-site clinical study led by Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, paving the way for an even greater impact. Liberty admits she constantly moves the goalposts for herself. While this drive pushes her to strive for more, she advises others to remember and celebrate the small successes along the journey. 💪 Acknowledging Bias Liberty initially found it frustrating when the focus was on her being a female founder rather than her groundbreaking work. But she soon had to acknowledge that the data doesn’t lie, as she watched male counterparts secure funding more easily despite having less traction or data. This awareness has taught her to seek out investors and team members who recognize her drive and believe in the mission, leaving stereotypes in the past. 💡 Advice for Founders Liberty’s key advice is to accept criticism without letting it overwhelm you. "Everyone has an opinion at some point, and they become contradicting." She believes that while staying flexible is important, trusting yourself and knowing what’s best for your company is also crucial. ✨ Join the Conversation We’re thrilled to feature Liberty Foreman and Sierra Medical in this week’s Female Founder Fridays. Share your thoughts and follow their journey! #redefiningVC #femalefounders #womeninVC #Innovation #MedTech #HelenaCapital #FemaleFounderFridays #FemaleEntrepreneurs
