Single-cell sequencing can be used to record gene expression in individual cells at a specific point in time. The tool #sCIRCLE developed by Lars Barquist from the Helmholtz Institute Würzburg (HIRI) and colleagues from Technische Hochschule Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) now helps to better visualize the enormous amount of data generated by the method. https://lnkd.in/eKFh5Xnm #SingleCellSequencing #scRNAseq #DataVisualization

Hair follicle infections are often difficult to treat. A team led by Claus-Michael Lehr with first author Samy Aliyazdi from the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) has now developed a 3D-printed model system for hair follicles that can be used to better assess the efficacy of new antibiotics. https://lnkd.in/ekcTw3Gs #DrugDevelopment #AntibioticResistance

The 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference of the Parties will be held in Cali, Colombia. To Esteban Charria Girón, doctoral student in the department of Marc Stadler at the HZI and a native of Cali, the topic of biodiversity holds a special importance: In his research, he is studying novel anti-infectives from fungi. “By understanding their biodiversity, we can discover previously unknown bioactive molecules that may lead to the development of new antimicrobials,” says Charria Girón. To help preserve the fungal biodiversity among others topics, he is active in the Colombian-German Network for Research and Innovation BioGeCo. Recently, he presented his research about biodiversity and the discovery of novel antibiotics from fungi in the Kielerwoche to different parties from science, society and local government. In a recent study, Charria Girón and colleagues found a novel native fungus from Cali, Colombia, with untapped potential to produce new antimicrobials. This highlights the importance of preserving and studying biodiversity hotspots, as they might offer new solutions to the current antibiotic crisis. https://lnkd.in/eQkqyTRb #COP16 #Biodiversity
