Two at one stroke: a research team from the University Alliance Ruhr has found a catalyst that can be used to convert ammonia into the energy carriers hydrogen and nitrite, which in turn can be easily processed into fertilizer. 💪 The production of hydrogen and the production of fertilizers have so far been separate chemical processes. With the new approach, the team from Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Universität Duisburg-Essen is demonstrating that the two can be combined on a laboratory scale: ➡️ The background: to make it easier to transport, hydrogen is to be converted into ammonia at the production site. It would then have to be converted back into hydrogen at the point of use. This is usually done using the reverse Haber-Bosch reaction, in which ammonia is converted into nitrogen and hydrogen. Of the two products, however, only the hydrogen can be used profitably. ➡️ In the new process, ammonia and water are used to produce nitrite and hydrogen. In contrast to the conventional process, the hydrogen output is doubled, and instead of non-usable nitrogen, nitrite is mainly produced - which can easily be further processed into fertilizer. With their work, the researchers show that their thought experiment works in principle. Another innovative hydrogen project: a production facility for sustainable hydrogen, the Green Hydrogen Hub Stuttgart (GH2S), is to be built at the port of Stuttgart. 👏 Four electrolysers will produce up to 1000 tons of high-purity hydrogen per year - exclusively from green electricity. And whenever there is an oversupply of renewable energy. The production plant is linked to a logistics concept for supplying industry, research and development as well as hydrogen filling stations for heavy goods vehicles. The construction site is currently being prepared. Construction of the plant itself is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2025 and, if everything goes according to plan, it is expected to be commissioned at the end of 2026. A pioneering project! 👉 Last year, the drugstore chain dm-drogerie markt Deutschland, the freight forwarder Amm and the logistics company DSV – Global Transport and Logistics launched a joint pilot project for the environmentally friendly delivery of goods to dm stores in Nuremberg. Goods are now supplied to the stores in the city using four fuel cell trucks that run exclusively on hydrogen. 👏 The aim of the project is to gain insights into how logistics processes and supply chains can be made more sustainable and how climate-damaging emissions can be avoided. The findings will then form an important basis for the future design of climate-friendly processes in the dm logistics network. 💚 The vehicles used are Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell type 6x2 (Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차)) and were rented from the Cologne-based company hylane, which operates Europe's largest fleet of hydrogen trucks.
