ARTICLE: ArchDaily features Germany’s #largest #timber parking garage, designed by herrmann+bosch architekten. The article includes new images from the recently completed #circular #pilotproject. #Circular #constructions demands that each component can be easily dismantled without causing damage. To meet these requirements, we designed a 5-story parking garage with a reversible timber structure. ARTICLE: Learn more about the ecological #potential of #reusing structural elements in the article "Wiederverwendung im Tragwerk – Ökologische Potenziale von Re-Use quantifizieren" by Jana Nowak, Clea Kummert, and Dr.-Ing. Matthias Oppe. “The re-use of building elements is one of the key strategies for establishing a climate-friendly and regenerative construction industry. However, building with used load-bearing components in particular has so far been hampered by both regulatory hurdles and the linear planning process. The re-use of steel girders from the stairwell tower of a parking garage in Stuttgart is an examplary project that demonstrates the great potential of reusing load-bearing components. The associated emission savings could be quantified with the help of life cycle assessment. A consideration of the future reusability shows the limits of this method for a comprehensive consideration of the ecological added value. To make these uniformly measurable and thus promote the implementation of a circular economy in the construction industry, the life cycle assessment method must be supplemented by a circularity assessment.” Link: https://lnkd.in/eWABtpZr #artcile #khnews

PROJECT: We are happy to share a glimpse of the new video showcasing the #glazed #gridshell covering the interior courtyard of Villers-Cotterêts castle. In the video, Olivier Weets (OLIVIER WEETS ARCHITECTE), Rami HOBLOS (Eiffage Métal), and Dr.-Ing. Thiemo Fildhuth (knippershelbig) provide insights into the #design, #construction and #fabrication of the double-curved glazed gridshell with a rhombic tessellation. Initiated by the French President, the #historic #château was renovated between 2020 and 2023 and transformed into the "Cité internationale de la langue française." A big thank you to everyone involved for the great collaboration! ARTICLE: ArchDaily features Fyrtornet, Sweden’s tallest #masstimber office building, designed by Wingårdhs. The article includes new images and in-depth insights into the recently completed #pilotproject. To push the height limits of timber buildings, we developed a set of analytical tools based on construction codes and cutting-edge literature to assess the wind-induced vibrations at the tower's top and provided valuable feedback to binderholz. ARTICLE: BauNetz highlights The Cradle, designed by HPP Architekten GmbH, with new images of this pioneering #circular #pilotproject. The Cradle Client: INTERBODEN Gruppe Architect: HPP Architekten GmbH Structural engineering: knippershelbig Facade engineering: knippershelbig Collaborators: SJB Kempter Fitze AG, Design-to-Production, DERIX-Gruppe, EPEA GmbH – Part of Drees & Sommer, Madaster Germany, Igor Martinoff Image: Olaf Rohl, Saint-Gobain Glass #article #khnews

PROJECT: Today, we’re excited to share a glimpse into the digital #ParametricApproach driving the design of the glazed #timber #gridshell for the elephant world. The roof structure was developed through highly parametric modeling, utilizing #Rhino and #Grasshopper as geometric platforms and #Sofistik for structural analysis. Custom digital tools allowed us to assess hundreds of unconventional connections, find optimum joint positions, identify structural patterns, and much more. Even complex and numerous wind and snow loads were digitally integrated based on wind tunnel test data. The grid shell design is the result of a holistic interdisciplinary approach that carefully balances numerous parameters, including architectural design, timber construction constraints, assembly feasibility, load-bearing behavior, roof covering complexity, connection to vertical façades, serviceability, cost efficiency, and construction scheduling. A huge thank you to all collaborators for the outstanding teamwork! We look forward to completing this project together! PROJECT #ElephantWorld: The delicate building envelope combines light transmission with energy efficiency The #façade of the multilayered #timber #gridshell consists of a glazed aluminum mullion-transom system, creating a delicate and light-permeable enclosure. The façade beams follow the guide curves of the underlying translational surface, allowing the use of #planar, #faceted glazing units. Triple-insulated glazing with low-emissivity coatings, UV-transmitting PVB interlayers, and satin-finished glass ensures an optimal balance of light transmission, energy efficiency, glare control, and bird protection. The entire structure is elevated, allowing air circulation around the underlying timber framework, thereby ensuring its long-term preservation. The façade plays a crucial role in regulating the climate conditions necessary for the elephants. Integrated operable roof lights automatically open when temperature or humidity thresholds are exceeded, ensuring a comfortable environment for the animals while maintaining energy efficiency. Stay tuned for further insights into the #ParametricApproach of the timber gridshell! PROJECT: Since the competition in late 2017, we have been working on a pioneering design for a new #elephant #world. From the very beginning, the central element has been a glazed #timber #gridshell. The definition of the #timber #roofstructure was achieved through highly #parametric #modeling, utilizing Rhino and Grasshopper as a geometric platform within an interdisciplinary and iterative planning process. The resulting grid geometry emerged from a holistic evaluation of numerous design parameters. The current design features a 63.5 × 46 m dome-shaped gridshell constructed from glued laminated #timber beams. The orthotropic timber roof consists of primary arches with separate upper and lower chords, complemented by two diagonal layers that provide structural stability and load distribution. The glazed gridshell is supported by a reinforced concrete ring beam. We are excited to see this project moving forward and look forward to continued collaboration!
