Today, we have released our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report for 2024. It looks at how we manage our business to deliver positive outcomes for people, places and planet. In focusing on our social and environmental sustainability activity, our routemap to net zero, and how we support our people to deliver their best, this report offers a holistic view of our performance and how we organise our business to deliver positive outcomes for our clients and our people. In broadening the scope from previous sustainability reports, we can provide a more rounded view of our business – reflecting the expectations of our clients, employees and other stakeholders to address challenges that stretch beyond the environment alone. Buro Happold was engaged by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) to breathe new life into Bait Mohammed bin Khalifa. Located in Al Ain, the house was built in 1958, and served as the home of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (1909–79), the father-in-law of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates. We were the lead consultant on the project to build this vibrant cultural community centre that commemorates its heritage and highlights the Transition Period as a pivotal era in the history of Al Ain and the UAE. A sustainable, green built environment is within sight, and it brings with it new jobs. New research from C40 Cities, supported by Buro Happold, shows how adopting ‘clean construction’ practices in cities has the potential to deliver new good, green job opportunities. Buro Happold has led this new research, focusing on seven global cities, in conjunction with C40 Cities and the New Economics Foundation. As cities grow and demand for both new development and retrofitting/maintenance of existing assets continues, a ‘clean construction’ industry is one that can benefit both climate and job creation. Once a sign of the city's decline, the long-vacant Michigan Central Station is now a symbol of Detroit's active revival. The 640,000-square-foot Beaux-Arts structure, which originally opened in 1913, officially reopened in June 2024. Buro Happold's engineering and mobility experts worked closely with Quinn Evans to provide various services for the project including MEP engineering, energy consulting, lighting design, digital and data advisory, transport and mobility, and urban and regional development advisory. Emblematic of Ford Motor Company’s vision for a “city of tomorrow,” the station has been transformed into an energy-efficient centerpiece for 21st century work and entertainment. The restoration has turned the long-abandoned train station into a vibrant hub for science, economic, and social activities, connecting the city’s historic past to a promising future. Buro Happold worked alongside SHoP Architects on the newly opened U.S. Embassy Tegucigalpa. Buro Happold provided sustainability consulting and energy analysis for the compound. The new embassy demonstrates building performance optimization and is targeting LEED Silver certification thanks to sustainable strategies including solar photovoltaic (PV) panels power generation, recycling rainwater for irrigation, and the use of local materials. The site design leverages locally sourced low-water-use plants and preserves an existing mature local heritage Guanacaste tree. The new embassy facility will provide functional space for consular services, migration discussions, and business support.
