Kraftblock - rethinking energy-storage.

Info

KRAFTBLOCK is an energy storage system that is able to decarbonize industries like steel, glass or ceramics, food, chemicals or paper. It will even help renewables to have their break-through in industrial heating. The modular and easily scalable system is based on a newly developed storage material that consists of app. 85% upcycled materials. It can store up to 1.2 MWh thermal energy at a temperature level up to 1,300 °C. Due to its modular character, a single module might also be used as a mobile storage unit, that enables you to charge the storage in one place, transport it by truck or train to another place and utilize the heat at the new location. We decarbonize by storing and utilizing formerly lost or wasted heat. This means Kraftblock minimizes the usage of fossile fuels, avoids the formation of carbon dioxide and increases the economic value of formerly lost or wasted energy.

Saving 49% of thermal energy without reducing production and even with €21 billion in cost savings? This is possible in Germany, according to a new short study by Hochschule Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. 226 TWh out of 460 TWh per year is the savings potential of process heat in German industry by improving energy efficiency, recovering and re-using waste heat, electrifying processes and optimising process control. And most of this has a short ROI: €12.8 billion in energy costs can be saved by implementing 63% of the measures. The rest has a 'longer' payback period of up to 5 years. Of course, our systems play a major role in realising this potential, not only in Germany, but for any industry with a high demand for process heat. By electrifying and reusing waste heat, energy efficiency and decarbonisation can be economical and improve a company's resilience. Thanks to the Deutsche Unternehmensinitiative Energieeffizienz e. V. (DENEFF) for making this study possible! Images are from the study, translation and orange box added by us. #energy #energyefficiency #wasteheat #electrification

Investments in renewable energy have the potential to cut EU power prices in half by 2030. Increasing the share of renewables in the electricity supply mix – which are much cheaper to produce compared to fossil fuels – could lower prices substantially in Europe where electricity pricing is marginal. And as this share of renewables grows, especially where wind and solar options are combined, the effect on pricing increases exponentially, according to a new Banco de España (Bank of Spain) report. Large-scale investments in renewable technologies are not only essential for the climate but also the key to maximizing the effect on electricity prices for a more affordable energy system. With KRAFTBLOCK, we are adding cost benefits to both producer and user: the storage flexibility allows for more generation and less curtailment of wind or solar parks, which brings additional low-cost energy into the market. This flexibility while lowering prices for consumer lowers also prices for energy supplier, since they need to sell less negative-prized electricity, therefore improving their balance sheet. Kraftblock is a win-win for the energy transition. #thermalstorage #electrification #greeninvestments

Together with Resource Recycling, Inc., we discussed one of the critical issues facing the #ewaste recycling industry: energy efficiency. According to the World Economic Forum, e-scrap is the fastest growing waste material globally and the heat and energy requirements for its #recycling are extremely high. And the temperatures lie between 300 °C and 850 °C (700 °F - 1,500 °F). In our conversation, we explored how we’re addressing the energy-intensive processes of recycling through our high-temperature #thermal storage solutions, which can convert renewable electricity into heat or recover waste heat, significantly cutting down emissions. I also shared how KRAFTBLOCK's technology is enabling a more #circulareconomy by supporting important sectors like recycling that are hard-to-abate. Our storage systems, too, are made of recycled materials. One of the biggest takeaways? Recycling needs heat – a lot of it - and energy costs can be a major hurdle. Energy storage systems can allow recycling companies to leverage electricity when it’s at its cheapest market price. They can also sell their excess waste heat to other companies while improving safety onsite. If you’re interested in learning more, please check out the interview. https://lnkd.in/en-3kAhC

#Competitiveness is the buzzword in Brussels right now. How can European businesses like ours stay ahead in a rapidly evolving global market? One thing is clear: growth and innovation are tied to embracing the clean energy transition. We welcome Ursula von der Leyen's initiative to support sustainable growth through the new #CleanIndustrialDeal, which aims to strengthen Europe's net-zero industry by fostering an environment for clean technologies. At PepsiCo, sustainability is at the core of our business—from crop sourcing to product development—driving our efforts to build a better food system. However, to stay competitive while decarbonising, affordable renewable energy access, reliable grid capacity, and modernised grid infrastructure will be essential. A great example of how today we are already decarbonising through electrification is in our manufacturing site in our Broek op Langedijk in the Netherlands. To produce our Lay’s and Cheetos crisps in this plant, we are switching from natural gas to green energy stored in a thermal battery. This #innovation, made possible through collaboration with Eneco Belgium and KRAFTBLOCK, is reducing our carbon footprint while showcasing local partnership success. With a supportive Clean Industrial Deal that promotes the right policies, fosters ambitious partnerships, and ensures adequate grid infrastructure and capacity, projects like this will become increasingly attractive to European industry.
