Kraftblock - rethinking energy-storage.
Info
KRAFTBLOCK is an energy storage system that is able to decarbonize industries like steel, glass or ceramics, food, chemicals or paper. It will even help renewables to have their break-through in industrial heating. The modular and easily scalable system is based on a newly developed storage material that consists of app. 85% upcycled materials. It can store up to 1.2 MWh thermal energy at a temperature level up to 1,300 °C. Due to its modular character, a single module might also be used as a mobile storage unit, that enables you to charge the storage in one place, transport it by truck or train to another place and utilize the heat at the new location. We decarbonize by storing and utilizing formerly lost or wasted heat. This means Kraftblock minimizes the usage of fossile fuels, avoids the formation of carbon dioxide and increases the economic value of formerly lost or wasted energy.

We released our report on the cost benefits of flexibility with thermal energy storage to the press and got some great feedback. It was of particular interest in Spain, where the potential is very high. Last year we carried out an analysis of the cost benefits of electrification with our system compared to unflexible direct electrification. Between 30% and 150% of wholesale market costs can be saved using our storage. Using a large industrial consumer as an example, we compared the Californian, German, Spanish and Australian markets. Apart from the cost benefits of using off-peak electricity and transporting heat for processes, there are also system benefits: Below is a graph of grid congestion costs, which are expected to increase in the future. Flexible demand reduces congestion costs. This means that for every storage unit installed, several times as much renewable energy can be brought online. Heat storage is demolishing battery storage in some key areas 🔥🔋 While batteries get the spotlight, heat storage is quietly solving big challenges: - Lifespan: 30–50 years vs. ~10 years for batteries. - Footprint: Heat storage needs a fraction of the space. - Efficiency: Directly stores and uses thermal energy, skipping the costly conversion steps. For industries like steel, chemicals, and food processing, heat storage is the ultimate decarbonization tool. Martin Schichtel, founder and CEO of KRAFTBLOCK, is giving it the attention it deserves.🌍💡 #EnergyStorage #CleanTech #Sustainability

On 12 December 2024, there was an event of Dunkelflaute with day-ahead prices of over 900€/MWh in Denmark and Germany. During a couple of hours electricity was very costly, leading to some factories shutting down or making losses. During and following the event there was also a big discourse on the prices and a lot of misinformation was spread. Here is a bit of putting the day into context. Dunkelflaute is the phenomenon when neither wind nor PV generate a lot of electricity due to the sole reason of weather conditions. While there is no general definition, often an hourly capacity factor of 20% is the threshold of the term. This means: A 1 MW solar park only produced 0.2 MWh or less in 60 minutes. More on the definition and occurrence of Dunkelflaute in our blog article, link in the comments. On that day there some false information was spread: Myth: Germany could not supply itself with electricity in times of Dunkelflaute. There was over 10 GW of reserve power that was not used, both of coal and the decentral natural gas and CHP plants (https://shorturl.at/mK943). There was however the question, why this reserve was not used and maybe bring down costs. This is now under investigation by the German Cartell Office (https://shorturl.at/GZifV). On this day there was also a lot of imported electricity. Myth: Imports are bad and costly Electricity is imported when prices are lower than in your own country. In the context of a free market in central and northern Europe, trade is free and cannot be restricted, apart from the capacity of the interconnectors. Imports are usually beneficial for countries, especially Germany. Myth: There is no relevant wind and sun power at all in wintertime. While the PV output decreases compared to the summer season, the wind around the northern Europe seas increases during the winter season. The total duration of Dunkelflaute events is between 50-100h (out of 720h) each November, December and January, except in Sweden where it can be over 150h. This is very much higher than in the other nine months, however less than 14% of the time. Solution: Storage in the form of pumped storage, batteries and also thermal energy storage helpsto smooth out the dark periods and reduce prices. Thermal energy storage is the most important tool for the industry. With Kraftblock, we could have charged during the night that day and bridged the hours. Normally our systems are designed to charge once or twice a day when prices are very low or negative. On that day this would have saved thousands and for large industries over 100.000€ in electricity costs. Going into a longer period of Dunkelflaute, say two days, additional security can be provided by additional storage, but not by additional charging equipment. The industry would then be able to prepare according to weather forecasts by charging longer and more storage in advance, covering more of the dark period to avoid price spikes. #dunkelflaute #energy #storage #renewables

What if I told you there is a way to get your customers to pay for your pilot projects? There is -- Martin Schichtel is here to tell you how. Today I'm psyched to share an episode I recorded with Martin Schichtel, the CEO and Founder of KRAFTBLOCK. Their energy storage tech helps solve the high-heat issue that many manufacturing and industrial clients have. Their energy storage system can store heat up to 1300ºC. A huge upgrade when compared to a lot of heat storage systems. It can be charged by cheap renewable electricity or waste heat, then discharged when needed. Critically, they can discharge heat or electricity depending on their client's needs. Perhaps the most fascinating part of this story is how they got their customers to pay for the pilots and demonstration plants, preventing them from burning their precious equity capital. Martin was able to do this because he understood the needs of the industrial sector, partially because he worked in this space, but also because he spent a LOT of time meeting with customers and gaining trust. Before setting out on this full-time, he made sure that the napkin math was mathing. About 5 years later, they were deploying their first pilots, again paid for by their customers. Fast forward to today, they have 5 projects deployed and are well on their way to creating modular systems so they can scale up fast. Martin's insights will make you smarter and help you succeed - especially if you're a hardware founder. Happy new year everybody! We got exciting news for the beginning of the year. While we deploy our systems in several countries, behind the scenes we are already working on new features and improvements of our thermal storage plants. Both the storage itself and the system around it, such as ducts, flue gas filters or heat distribution, are parts of our ongoing R&D to improve efficiency and make the system suitable for new and more intensive applications. For our innovative industrial R&D from 2020 to 2023, we have now received confirmation from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany for a mid six-figure research allowance! This is a huge signal that underlines the importance of our work for the industry and supports the relevance of our developments for the industry. Thermal energy storage with renewable electricity has the potential to replace 8% of global industrial gas consumption by 2030, according to Systemiq. Additionally, there is also great potential to recover and use high-temperature waste heat and the flexible ability to store concentrated solar power and generate electricity.
