💡 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴!   The opening of a new airport or terminal is a highly complex venture. It’s not only about the infrastructure being ready at a specific date. It involves numerous stakeholders, processes and systems that must be brought together. The #ORAT methodology sets a clear framework for an on-time and in-budget opening of a new airport infrastructure. Yet, there are a number of key success factors to any ORAT project, that are pivotal to a smooth project flow and a successful opening. In our latest whitepaper, our ORAT expert Herbert Michael Keffel introduces you to these factors and gives practical recommendations for action. 👉 Download your free copy now: https://lnkd.in/dgHJVftV   If you want to learn more about ORAT, don’t hesitate to contact Herbert in person! And if you are attending the upcoming ORAT World Summit 2024 in London, take the opportunity to get in touch with Carolina Calvo Batalla, MBA, one of our ORAT experts, who will be  speaking on the conference. 🔔 Stay tuned, more information to follow soon! #whitepaper #ORAT #ShapingTheFutureOfAviation

Five years ago, Stefan Fornasier Fornasier embarked on an adventurous journey, when a small team of Munich Airport International (MAI) left Germany to take over maintenance and concessions at the old Terminal A of Newark Liberty International Airport, while at the same time preparing for the opening and operation of the new Terminal A (EWR-TA). Since then, a lot has happened. EWR-TA started operations in 2023 and was awarded “5 Stars” and “World’s Best New Airport Terminal” by Skytrax in 2024. Today, Stefan is the COO of our subsidiary Munich Airport NJ LLC (MANJ), the operator of EWR-TA.   𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗳𝗮𝗻, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗦? From 2010-2014, I was an ORAT Project Manager for MAI and supported with the opening of Hamad International Airport. Me and my family moved to Doha and needed to adapt to a very different cultural environment. So, starting a new live in a new location was something we already did, therefore, the transition from Munich to NJ was a relatively easy move for us.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲? Me and my team faced multiple challenges in the different phases of MANJ’s journey: While managing the old Terminal A, we needed to keep an aging building up and running above capacity. Then hit Covid. After surviving this crisis, we had to manage the quickly recovering domestic travel in the old Terminal while preparing in parallel for the opening of EWR-TA. And since January 2023, we operate this beautiful new Terminal A while dealing with some minor but typical teething problems every new building is coming with. Together with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, TSA and our Airline partners we successfully manage to address all challenges and provide a world-class environment for all stakeholders and customers.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 re𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀? Seeing the first real-life passengers using our new Terminal A on opening day. I was fascinated and proud seeing the Terminal operating under full steam – all the time and effort was rewarded on this day. The second-best moment was when we were told that Terminal A received not one but two Skytrax awards: 5-Star Certification and World’s Best New Terminal.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗦 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆? I have the pleasure of working in a highly divers environment, with colleagues from all over the world, and this also comes with a high sensitivity for any form on harassment. The work culture in the US is a lot more fast paced and result-driven than in Germany.   Congratulations on your 5-year anniversary, Stefan 🎉🎈! We are happy to have you on board and tremendously proud of what you and your team achieved at EWR-TA 💯!

#Meet Herbert Michael Keffel, our Head of Competence Center Operations, ORAT & IT. Herbert is one of our most seasoned aviation professionals and our dedicated expert for #ORAT projects. With a strong and holistic operational background, he knows how to guide and support large teams through complex challenges.   𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁? Yes true – it was the ORAT for the new Munich Airport in 1992. The relocation from Riem to the current location near Freising was carried out in a truly remarkable overnight operation. I was a resource allocator with ground handling at the time and part of the team that managed the relocation. My job was to allocate trucks and special vehicles to the loading zones to load the material, vehicles and mainly GSE at the old airport and release them to the new airport at the right time to the right place.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁? It was the first ORAT project in history ever. The beauty was that it was masterminded by the ops planning department of Munich Airport, they in turn acquired people from different areas to manage and execute the project. Everything went seamlessly and without the slightest glitch! From this project, whose methodology was unprecedented at that time, we derived the program that we call ORAT (operational readiness and airport transfer) today.   𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻? I was involved in 11 and led 6 of them. It is an elevating experience to help bring such complex infrastructure to life and thus connect the world.   𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁? The first ORAT project that I participated from start to end was the one in Kuala Lumpur. I was seconded to there from 1996 and it was my first time in southeast Asia. I was young, with a great team that managed this huge project. Another highlight was the sheer size and complexity of Istanbul. The move from TK and their affiliated companies from Atatürk Airport to the new site was the largest move in mankind so far – all goods transported would cover 33 football pitches.   𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀? 30 years ago, it was a rather manual exercise, at the very beginning with pen, paper, and whiteboards. This was enough to manage the logistical challenges. With the ongoing digitalization and growing complexity in logistics, IT is increasingly important to manage the project itself but also stakeholders, logistics, trainings, and trials. We now see and test the implementation of cloud based ORAT collaboration and management platforms. The next step will be the introduction if KI to further improve and facilitate logistics, planning and communication and thus streamline ORAT projects. #newairport #ShapingTheFutureOfAirports #airportopening
