For everyone currently working on CSRD, we know it is not easy! Lots of detail, ambiguity, and mysterious notation - like ESRS E4, DR SBM 3, 16(b)iii. 😶 Therefore, we believe it is important to keep sight of the big picture: CSRD is our most ambitious and scaled attempt yet to expose and, with other EU Green Deal regulations, reform our economic systems to make them compatible with the limits of our planet. And we are here for you! We have outlined how our platform is making CSRD compliance more efficient and strategic for customers as part of holistic corporate nature management. If this sounds relevant, please get in touch! CSRD requires companies to evaluate their impacts, risks and opportunities (IRO) in relation to biodiversity (ESRS E4), water (E3), and pollution (E2) (assuming that a company has deemed these topics material in their Double Materiality Assessment). This evaluation requires site-specific data points and analysis. Nala provides these site-specific data points, as well as several features to streamline analysis, disclosure, and the preparation of the sustainability statements, per the carousel below.

"Seidenbluse statt Wollsocken: Anna Alex macht Naturschutz zur Chefsache!” Today, we’re especially proud of our co-founder, Anna Alex, and thankful to Süddeutsche Zeitung and Kathrin Werner for giving Nala - and thus nature - such an important and much-needed platform by placing nature conservation in the economic section. Given that nature only receives 0.2% of all broadcast minutes on TV (according to a study by the MaLisa foundation), this coverage marks a meaningful shift in #media attention! The article traces Anna’s path from her entrepreneurial beginnings in the fashion industry to addressing the climate crisis with Planetly, and now with Nala Earth, focusing fully on protecting our planet’s natural ecosystems. We at Nala think this piece beautifully captures our perspective and vision - step by step, we’re bringing nature to the forefront of business priorities. 🚗 From Negative Examples to Role Models: Volvo Group’s Biodiversity Leadership 🌿 After recently mentioning Tesla as a negative example in the automotive industry when it comes to #NatureImpact, today we turn to a positive example: Volvo. While the #CSRD only marks the beginning, Volvo exemplifies the importance of comprehensive nature (risk) management, serving as a #RoleModel in the industry and beyond. Here some key takeaways from their #PositionPaper, launched only 3 weeks ago in September 2024: - Volvo used 2021 data to create a baseline for its impact on nature, conducting a Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) to determine where biodiversity is most affected within its value chain. - The assessment revealed that only 2% of their impact comes from their own operations, while 34% is upstream and 64% is downstream (production and fuel usage). - Volvo acknowledges that LCA-based biodiversity footprinting is essential to identify key impact areas, but they stress the need for context-specific, measurable data to guide actions and track progress. Volvo’s #NatureAction approach includes: - Focusing on circularity and resource efficiency in response to their upstream biodiversity impacts. - Exploring ways to counterbalance negative impacts through restoration and conservation in affected ecosystems, possibly through credits or direct funding of restoration projects near their operations and suppliers. - Next steps include gathering localized nature data from suppliers to better understand the State of Nature at their own sites as well as nature impacts and dependencies. Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/ePsh_qnH Below is a graphic from PwC’s 2023 analysis, which we have built at Nala Earth to highlight where & how automotive companies interact with nature. Do you have other companies in mind serving as #RoleModels in nature & biodiversity? #Biodiversity #Sustainability #NatureAction #Volvo #Automotive

Let’s talk about OWNERSHIP! Two weeks ago, we had our #NalaTeamWeek. In a remote setup like ours, these in-person weeks are full of energy and momentum. Between team lunches and after-work sports, we use this time carefully for #360-degree feedback sessions and #culture building. This time, we explored one of our 5 Nala values: OWNERSHIP. Here’s a reminder of our 5 Nala values: WE MOVE WE TAKE OWNERSHIP WE CARE for our people & the planet WE STAY CURIOUS WE ARE BOLD So, what does ownership mean to us? 🤔 It's a simple word, but with many interpretations. To kick things off, we had a #brainstorming session where everyone shared their personal take on ownership. Check out the 2nd picture for a snapshot of our ideas. The goal? To create a shared understanding of what this value means in our daily work and interactions. We highlighted three key concepts (links in comments for more details): 🔺 The Drama Triangle: A model that helps identify unproductive behaviors like blaming or playing the victim. True ownership is about stepping out of this triangle - taking responsibility for our actions and outcomes. ✋ The Buck Stops with Me: This phrase means that you don’t pass the responsibility to someone else. When challenges arise, it’s about standing up, taking charge, and being accountable for the results - whether they’re successes or failures. ⚖ Radical Candor: Ownership thrives on open communication. Radical candor is about delivering honest feedback while showing genuine care. It’s the balance between holding others accountable and helping them grow. In our following feedback session, we discussed how we embody this value: What are we doing well? Where can we improve? What does #OWNERSHIP mean to YOU? 💬 #Ownership #TeamCulture #Accountability #NalaValues

"We're not in the desert" #ElonMusk joked about water concerns at Tesla's Gigafactory in Brandenburg. Now, water issues have become the primary reason the plant isn't fully operating, costing the company #billions. Nature and biodiversity can seem complex and abstract, so here’s another story that emphasizes the critical need for companies to manage nature-related risks. 🚗 No Water, No Cars Tesla's Berlin Gigafactory faced significant hurdles due to groundwater shortages. Despite efforts to reduce water usage, the factory's high demands triggered opposition from environmental groups, concerned, among others, about regional drinking water shortages. The Brandenburg state granted a licence to supply 1.4 million cubic metres of groundwater annually to Tesla, but climate change and recent droughts severely stressed the region's water reserves. The water shortages led to production delays, with Tesla reaching only half its intended capacity and putting $5.7 billion at risk. Public complaints contributed to a 3.1% drop in Tesla #shares in February 2022, part of a larger 19% decline early in the year. In response, Tesla implemented water-saving measures like optimising water-intensive processes and recycling rainwater. 🌲 Deforestation Concerns Tesla's Gigafactory also caused the deforestation of 329 hectares (3.29 km²; 500,000 trees), reflecting the negative environmental impact of site expansion. “Not so fun” fact: The lost trees were equivalent to about 13,000 tonnes of CO2, the annual emissions of 2,800 average internal combustion engine cars in the US. This case highlights the #financial and #reputational risks of neglecting nature in business planning. Read more abut this case and other cases in our Whitepaper: https://lnkd.in/dBQmxg78 Have you encountered similar examples? #naturerisk #businessrisk #sustainability #Tesla #NalaEarth

Since nature and biodiversity can be #complex and #abstract, today we want to share a #story. A story about why it’s essential for companies to measure and manage their impact on nature, identify risks, and seize opportunities. Because stories often resonate longer than mere #facts. Take this story to the next strategy meeting with the CEO, budget planning with the CFO, or simply to discuss over lunch with your colleagues. 🌳 Deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest Cattle ranching is responsible for 60-80% of Amazon deforestation. From 2017 to 2022, deforestation near meat plants in the Amazon covered an area equivalent to a triangle linking Amsterdam, Brussels, and Dortmund. From 2001 to 2020, the total Amazon deforestation reached 550,000 km² - an area the size of a triangle connecting Paris, Madrid, and Rome. 🌍 Consequences for JBS JBS, the world’s largest meat producer, has faced scrutiny for sourcing cattle from illegally deforested areas, resulting in fines and lost business. In 2017, JBS was fined $8 million for purchasing 50,000 cattle from such lands, prompting retailers like Lidl GB (global) and Sainsbury's to reconsider their beef sourcing. 💼 Other Financial and Legal Implications JBS's potential New York Stock Exchange listing has raised concerns among U.S. Senators and environmental groups about increased deforestation, fearing that new funds could further increase deforestation. Additionally, NGOs have filed complaints against French banks financing JBS, citing violations of French law. This story underscores the high cost of business practices that harm nature and biodiversity... and the value of recognising and mitigating the risks in advance. Have you heard about similar cases? #naturerisk #businessrisk #NalaEarth
