  • ✈️ Hamburg x Christchurch: Bringing decarbonised aviation to life 💚 New Zealand Climate Change Ambassador Stuart Horne visited Hamburg Airport yesterday to learn more about its pioneering efforts in sustainable aviation — from becoming Germany’s first CO₂-neutral airport to launching the Hydrogen Aviation Lab together with Lufthansa Technik, German Aerospace Center (DLR) and ZAL Center of Applied Aeronautical Research. A highlight of the visit: the transformed A320 was fuelled with hydrogen for the first time! For New Zealand, sustainable aviation is more than a goal — it’s essential. As a remote, globally connected country, our future connectivity depends on decarbonising air travel. 🌏 We discussed the partnership between Hamburg and Christchurch International Airport Limited. Though 18,500 km apart, they’re working closely to develop green hydrogen infrastructure and share innovative strategies to decarbonise ground operations and prepare for next-generation aircraft. We’re also proud of the collaboration between Air New Zealand and Airbus on zero-emissions aircraft — showing what’s possible when innovation and sustainability cross borders. It’s exciting to see how these international partnerships support the transition to a low-emission future for aviation. 🇳🇿🤝🇩🇪

  • From Berlin to the Pacific: Accelerating the Net-Zero Transition 🇳🇿🤝🇩🇪 New Zealand Climate Change Ambassador Stuart Horne visited Germany for the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue, where he met with counterparts from the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action to exchange ideas on international climate diplomacy and bilateral energy cooperation. ⚡️Ambassador Horne shared New Zealand’s experience in accelerating the energy transition—already 88% renewable electricity, thanks to abundant hydro, wind, solar and geothermal resources. But we’re not stopping there: New Zealand is working to double its renewable generation capacity and is at the forefront of supercritical geothermal energy R&D. Attracting high quality clean energy investment is crucial to deliver this vision— thanks to NZ’s fair tax system, skilled workforce and strong innovation, it’s a great place to do business. 🔋 At Siemens Energy, we explored cutting-edge tech at their electrolyser factory and discussed market trends in green hydrogen, offshore wind and grid solutions—all vital for the global energy transition. 🍽️ Ambassador Craig Hawke also hosted a dinner with German climate and energy experts from across government, business and civil society to discuss the net-zero pathways of both countries—sharing challenges, innovations and lessons learned. 🏝️At a #BETD2025 side event focused on the energy transition in the Pacific Islands, key takeaways include the importance of local context, improving access to finance, and the need for adaptable, decentralised energy technologies that deliver long-term impact. Two busy, inspiring days showcasing NZ’s commitment to global climate action and building clean energy partnerships!

🤝 Fruitful collaboration between German Sport University Cologne and New Zealand Universities The German Sport University Cologne welcomed New Zealand Ambassador Craig John Hawke, Mary Mulholland (New Zealand's Science and Innovation Counsellor, MBIE) and Olga Elli (ENZ) to their campus. 👉 It was insightful to learn from Dr. Robert Rein (Research Fellow) about the collaboration with the University of Otago under the German-New Zealand academic exchange programme (Programme for Project-Related Personal Exchange), which also presents opportunities for collaboration beyond the scope of this project. 👉 Dr. Gerard King (Head of International Office) highlighted the strong cooperation with three New Zealand universities and the pride of having Kiwi students on the campus in Germany. 👉 Prof Dr Ansgar Thiel and Prof Dr Tobias Vogt emphasized the importance of global partnerships in academia and research which only thrive when there is a strong alignment of core values between institutions, mutual respect and a common vision for innovation. Thank you to the German Sport University Cologne for hosting us! 🙏

✨🌿It was a true honour for Ambassador Hawke to be part of a special Kohā ceremony at the Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich, where three remarkable New Zealand artists – Sofia Tekela-Smith, Neke Moa, and Stevei Houkāmau – celebrated the deep ancestral connections of objects from Aotearoa New Zealand and Oceania. In the presence of museum staff, visitors, and members of the Polynesian community, the artists connected with and wore some of the most treasured pieces in the collection. In keeping with the idea of Kohā, small gifts were exchanged with the artists and Kava, traditionally prepared in a wooden bowl from the root of the pepper bush, was drunk.
