Making sure every drop counts and minimising our impact on water quality is key to ensuring our water supply remains both secure and clean for the future. A precious resource, water is of critical importance to New Zealand’s wine industry, for vine irrigation, frost protection, and winemaking, to name just a few. Therefore, using water as efficiently as possible is a priority. Creative thinking and innovative solutions are resulting in wineries and vineyards developing initiatives such as wastewater wetlands, investing in restoring ecosystems, creating on-site storage wells, and making the most of our terroir. Our goal is to be world leaders in efficient water use and the protection of water quality 💧 Learn more via the link below. https://bit.ly/3Eaj3o5 #nzwine #water #sustainability

Reducing emissions in Tohu Wines' winery and vineyards is part of being good kaitiaki, says Dianne Brown, Manager of Wakatū Incorporation Incorporation’s Whenua Ora sustainability programme. “Our aim is to transform our operations into a resilient, low-emissions organisation, ensuring long-term sustainability while addressing the risks of climate change specific to the Te Tauihu region.” Wakatū, which produces Tohu Wines in Nelson and Marlborough, was one of three companies involved in the Wine Decarbonisation Programme run by EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority) and Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ), to create concrete steps towards emissions reduction goals. When Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) was launched, the wellbeing of the environment became a thread running through conversations and decisions in the growing, making and selling of New Zealand wine. Thirty years on, the groundbreaking SWNZ programme is woven into the story of Aotearoa wine, setting it apart from the rest of the world. SWNZ has evolved into a robust, independently audited programme that now certifies 96% of New Zealand’s vineyard area and approximately 90% of wine production by volume. New Zealand wine enjoyed a white Christmas this year, following the release of the latest performance figures of all wine in the UK market. In the four-week period leading up to 28 December 2024, New Zealand white wine was the country of origin leader in the Still White Wine Category, with value growth up 7.3% and volume growth up 9.7% compared to the same period last year (source: NielsenIQ). Chris Stroud, New Zealand Winegrowers’ Market Manager UK Europe says “We are delighted to see the continued strong performance of New Zealand white wine this past year, but particularly so over the busy Christmas period. We know consumers like to treat themselves and trade up over the festive season, so it is pleasing to see New Zealand as the white wine of choice. Ben Leen never tires of the view at Amisfield, where audacious guinea fowl strut the grounds against a backdrop of organic vines and the snow-capped Pisa Range. The stunning view from the Central Otago vineyard and winery is made even better for “knowing that we’re farming it as well as we can for the future”, says the winemaker. John Darby and his family, who established Amisfield in 1988, chose to follow organic viticulture to protect the longevity and legacy of the land, Ben says. The transition began in 2014, the year he arrived as a cellar hand, with complete BioGro certification in 2021. Viticulturist André Lategan, who’s lived on the vineyard since 2002, took a staggered approach, watching to see how the vineyard would respond. This year the three-day ProWine trade show in Shanghai hosted over 650 exhibitors from 32 countries and regions and over 25,000 professional buyers. The New Zealand Wine Pavilion was home to 11 wine brands and NZW also coordinated a masterclass with five wineries. The masterclass, hosted by Ian Dai, featured Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah and explored why they have become signature styles and examined the diversity and impact of soils, climate, and winemaking. NZW then hosted a networking evening that was open to all New Zealand wineries and guests and where we were delighted to be joined by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Trade Commissioner Steve Jones.
