How much could a stand-alone battery storage system have earned in Germany in September?💸 It’s time to explore battery storage opportunities in Germany’s spot and ancillary markets once again, comparing 3 different trading strategies (each single market, combining spot markets and our multi-market strategy across spot and ancillaries) and their respective trading incomes of September for a 10MW / 20MWh storage with a round-trip efficiency of 90% and an average of 1.77 daily cycles. For benchmarking our multi-market strategy across spot markets, FCR and aFRR, we compare our simulation results to the maximum possible incomes on FCR and aFRR capacity markets (perfect-foresight on clearing prices) as well as the use of a linear optimizer that trades each spot market individually and in one case all spot markets combined. To achieve realistic outcomes, we utilize market forecasts for optimization and actual prices for settlements (also following the pay-as-bid principle of aFRR capacity), ensuring no assumption of perfect foresight in our multi-market strategy. Trade execution on the continuous intraday market is estimated using the ID1 price index. 🔎 Our Findings: 🔋September showed mixed developments of single-market performances compared to previous months. While day-ahead and intraday auction markets stayed almost consistent with August levels, income potentials on the continuous intraday market hit their lowest point since May. FCR and aFRR prices also dropped to the lowest levels - however only by slight margins. 🔋For these price levels, our linear optimizer benchmarks show €8.6k-11.4k/MW across individual spot markets as well as €14.6k/MW for combining day-ahead, intraday auction, and continuous intraday. Therefore spot market potentials decreased to July and May levels. 🔋Ancillary service income potentials capped at €11.7k-14.7k/MW across FCR and aFRR services, with a again narrower spread between aFRR positive and negative compared to August. 🔋With no single market standing out in September, our multi-market strategy resorted to a very balanced approach of spreading returns across all markets - with 25% as the highest share of incomes from one individual market. Combining ancillary services with spot markets and deciding on the best options every delivery period anew, the suena autopilot achieved 18.9k€/MW. To ensure a solid business case, the autopilot adopted a more intensive storage operation, averaging 1.77 cycles per day. This approach allowed us to outperform the spot market benchmark by 29%, aFRR services by 29-44%, FCR by 62% and single spot markets by 66-119%. What an exciting few days it's been at WindEnergy Hamburg! 🍃 Co-location in wind energy was a key focus this year, as we explored how to maximize the efficiency of grid connections. Trade execution on the continuous intraday market is estimated using the ID1 price index.   🔎 Our Findings: 🔋August was again a very interesting month for trading batteries! We saw an increase in price levels from an already good month of July and especially spot market potentials came close to even the extraordinary month of June. This was mainly influenced by price levels on the continuous intraday (e.g. quarter-hourly prices of multiple of thousands of euros on the evening of the 26th). 🔋Those spot market opportunities can be seen in our benchmarks from the linear optimizer - showing 8.9-16.3k€/MW on single spot markets as well as 19.2k€/MW on the combination of them. The evening of the 26th hereby represented ~20-25% of the incomes. 🔋Ancillary service prices were similar to last month’s with maximum income potentials of 12.6-16k€/MW across FCR and aFRR – interestingly with higher differences between aFRR positive and negative. 🔋Amid the price levels in continuous intraday trading, our multi-market strategy, optimized with the suena autopilot, achieved slightly less separation from the spot market benchmark compared to previous months, yet still delivering a +12% upside, reaching 21.6k€/MW and outperforming single markets by margins of 32% to 143%. The increased focus on spot markets also led to a higher number of cycles, averaging 1.47 per day. As highlighted in last month's post, this approach makes sense during periods of spot markets trumping ancillaries.   Want to unlock the full potential of your battery storage investments?
