🩺 What's the state of trans healthcare in your country? 🩺 🩺 Trans people often face significant barriers to healthcare, with low access rates and high levels of stigma and discrimination from providers. Addressing the lack of provision and inequalities in access to trans-specific healthcare is an urgent issue that needs attention. 🩺 Our Trans Health Map is the only tool which tracks the availability and accessibility of trans-specific healthcare in the 27 Member States of the European Union. The map covers seven categories: 🩺 Type of trans-specific healthcare and its coverage 🩺 Requirement of psychiatric diagnosis 🩺Waiting times for the first appointment with a trans-specific healthcare professional 🩺Groups made to wait longer or excluded from accessing certain types of trans-specific healthcare 🩺 Access to puberty blockers for trans young people 🩺 Access to hormones for trans young people 🩺 Access to sexual and reproductive health services 🩺 The Map was created using an in-depth analysis of publicly available information and verified by country experts. 🩺 Learn more about trans-specific healthcare across the EU! 🏳️⚧️✨ The new Trans Health Map will be revealed this Wednesday, 30 October! 📅 Join us for a webinar on 6 November to dive deeper into the insights from the Map, explore the latest data, and discuss the state of trans healthcare across Europe. 🌟 International Day of Action for Trans Depathologisation 🌟 🏳️⚧️ Today, on International Day of Action for Trans Depathologisation— We call for an end to the treatment of trans identities as ‘mental health conditions’. 🏥 Even though WHO ICD-11 reforms in 2019 stopped classifying trans identities as a mental health disorder, trans-specific healthcare continues to be pathologised in almost all European and Central Asian countries. Only 🇲🇹Malta, 🇩🇰 Denmark, and eight regions of 🇪🇸 Spain (that we have info for) don’t require a psychiatric diagnosis to access trans-specific healthcare. 🩺Slow implementation of depathologisation means that access to trans-specific healthcare relies on a diagnosis rather than informed consent and individual decision-making. 💊 This leaves the door open for stigmatised views of trans-specific healthcare and about trans people as people who need fixing, making the person’s healthcare needs and desires a secondary concern. 💉 All of this affects the medical advice trans people receive, the overall environment and language used in healthcare settings, and public discussion on healthcare for trans people. 🧠 Focusing on a psychiatric diagnosis drains resources from already strained mental healthcare systems and distracts from the need for ongoing psychosocial support, which is an essential aspect of trans-specific healthcare. 🚧 This is clear when looking at the availability of psychological care in the EU. In many Member States, such as France, Ireland, Denmark, Czechia, and Slovakia, psychological care exists, but access is challenging for everyone, with trans people facing even more barriers. As a result, many trans people, often in difficult economic situations, are forced to look to expensive private healthcare, which is more often out of reach. 📅 To learn more about depathologisation and trans-specific healthcare in the EU, be sure to check out the 2024 edition of Trans Health Map 2024, out on 30 October! #TransDepath #StopTransPathologisation #TransRightsAreHumanRights

Our Policy team’s Deekshitha Ganesan (Senior Policy Officer) & Richard Köhler (Expert Advisor) have co-authored an article in Strasbourg Observers on a landmark case: W.W. v. Poland. 🏳️⚧️ 📅 On 11 July 2024, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that denying hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to a trans woman in a Polish prison violated her rights under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. This decision is a major win for trans people in prison, who often face barriers to trans-specific healthcare. 💊💜 Key points from the article: ✅ First of its kind: This ruling marks the first time the Court has explicitly recognised the importance of HRT for trans people in prison, affirming it as essential, life-saving healthcare. 🏳️⚧️ A positive step for trans rights: The decision underscores that States are obliged to provide access to necessary trans-specific healthcare, including in prison settings. 💡 A need for systemic change: The case reveals the systemic barriers and discrimination faced by trans people in prison, from delays in accessing care to the broader issue of transphobia within institutions. 🤝🏼 TGEU’s involvement: TGEU submitted comments to the Court at the time, stressing the importance of trans-specific healthcare for both physical and mental health and the unique vulnerabilities of trans people in prison. 📖 Read the article to learn more about this landmark ruling and what it means for trans rights: https://lnkd.in/dgGdVXnq #TransRights #TransRightsAreHumanRights Penal Reform International

🏳️⚧️ Coming out as trans is not a single moment but an ongoing process. Each time we meet someone new, start a new job, or even reconnect with old friends, the question of whether to come out may come up again. 🫶🏾 For some of us, coming out might happen many times across different stages of our lives, as our identities evolve or become clearer. You may find that you come out as trans at one point, and later in life come out again as lesbian, gay or queer, or something else entirely. It’s okay if your coming out journey is multilayered, gradual, or unfolds at different times. 🫂 For some of our trans siblings, safety, personal circumstances, or other factors make coming out impossible or not the right choice. There is no right or wrong way to navigate this. You might be out in certain spaces or about specific aspects of your identity and not others, and that’s okay. 🤝🏽 You’re still valid, loved, and part of our beautiful trans community no matter where you are in your gender journey. 🏳️⚧️ Remember, coming out—or not—is entirely personal. Whether you choose to share or hold close parts of your identity, you deserve respect and support every step of the way. You're not alone, and your experience is valid. #ComingOutDay #TransRights #TransRightsAreHumanRights

🏳️⚧️ Trans, gender diverse and intersex inclusion in sports is a human right 🏳️⚧️ 🤝🏾 Together with many organisations and individuals committed to gender equality, human rights, and social justice, welcome the latest report from UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, Alexandra Xanthaki, which emphasises the right of all people to participate in sports — including trans, gender diverse, and intersex people. 🗣️ In a time when discrimination and gatekeeping in sports are on the rise, we strongly affirm that sports should be safe, fair, and equitable for everyone, whether they are elite athletes, people participating at the community level, or anywhere in between. 🚫 Excluding people from sports based on their gender identity or sex characteristics is unacceptable. It fuels harmful narratives, such as rigid ideas around womanhood, femininity, and how women and girls should look, act and behave, that affect us all. 🏀 However, the concept of womanhood has historically been racialised often through violence against those deemed to be non-conforming. ⚽ As a result, athletes, particularly intersex women and women of colour from the Global South, are disproportionately targeted for sex testing and excluded from women's sports, which discourages broader female participation. 🫶🏾 Sport is a space of empowerment, joy, community, and friendship. Trans, gender diverse, and intersex people deserve the same opportunities to thrive in sports as their cisgender peers. It’s time to end discrimination in sports and build a more inclusive future for all. 🚨 Top EU Court has ruled that Member States should recognise legal gender recognition granted in another Member State. 🏳️⚧️ The case concerns Arian Mirzarafie-Ahi, a Romanian trans man, with dual Romanian-British citizenship, who changed his name and gender marker in the UK. However, Romanian authorities refused to recognise his new male name and gender marker. ✅ The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) sided with Arian, stating that Romania must recognise the legal gender recognition granted in the UK. 🤝🏽 This decision reinforces the fundamental rights of EU citizens, particularly regarding free movement. It will have an immensely positive impact, increasing legal protection for all trans people in the EU. 🌐 Read our Joint Statement with ILGA-Europe and Asociația ACCEPT: https://lnkd.in/dM-Szdcr #TransRights #TransRightsAreHumanRights

🌍 Last week, the EU Commission President unveiled the much-anticipated Commissioner nominations, setting the agenda for the next five years. However, we are concerned about a significant shift: the Equality portfolio has been merged with Crisis Management and Preparedness. 🚨 This change raises alarm bells that equality issues may be overshadowed by urgent crisis responses. We fear that vital equality initiatives will be sidelined. 💬 Our Policy Officer, Farah Abdi outlined the issue. Farah said: “This shift shows a worrying disconnect between equality and key areas like democracy and justice, sidelining protections for LGBTI people, especially trans refugees, who face heightened risks to their fundamental rights. Without committing to a strong legislative push, the renewed LGBTIQ Equality Strategy risks further marginalisation at a critical time.” 💔 After reflecting on this disappointing news, we joined forces with other civil society organisations to issue an open letter. Together, we are advocating for equality to be prioritised alongside crisis management. 📣 We call on the Commission to ensure that equality is at the forefront of their agenda and that strong policies are developed to protect the most vulnerable people across Europe. 📖 Read the Open Letter on our website: https://lnkd.in/dBdeJHhj #TransRights #TransRightsAreHumanRights
