Maximum score for #ToyotaGAZOORacing with Chilean one-two TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team is celebrating a maximum score on a challenging #RallyChile as Kalle Rovanperä claimed victory ahead of team-mate Elfyn Evans. In addition to its overall one-two, TGR-WRT also locked out the top three places in the separate Super Sunday classification and posted the fastest two times in the rally-ending Power Stage. It therefore becomes the first team to secure the maximum possible haul of 55 manufacturers’ points under the new system introduced for 2024 – doing all it can to maintain its championship ambitions with two rounds remaining and reducing the gap to the lead from 35 to 17 points. Sunday’s final loop of four stages brought a continuation of the demanding conditions experienced on Saturday in the mountains of the Biobío region to the south of host city Concepción, when Rovanperä took the lead from Evans in heavy fog. Running first on the road as he restarted following damage on Saturday morning, Sébastien Ogier seized the opportunity presented by the damp conditions to set the pace on the final day, winning every one of the last four stages together with co-driver Vincent Landais. Rovanperä had entered the final day with a lead of 15.1 seconds over Evans that he extended during the morning’s first two tests. In a thrilling finish to the Power Stage, he was just 0.1s slower than Ogier as he clinched his fourth win of the season along with co-driver Jonne Halttunen. Rovanperä’s 15th win together with TGR-WRT draws him level with fellow two-time champion Carlos Sainz as the drivers who have achieved the most FIA World Rally Championship victories for Toyota. Evans and his co-driver Scott Martin made a strong return to the podium for the fifth time this season, having claimed the rally lead on Friday morning and held it until they faced the worst of the fog on Saturday afternoon. They took third on Super Sunday and fifth on the Power Stage. Both Ogier and Evans remain in mathematical contention for the drivers’ championship going into the last two rounds of the season with 60 points still up for grabs. Sami Pajari and Enni Mälkönen finished in sixth position in their second event in a #GRYARIS Rally1 HYBRID. Building on their strong debut at Rally Finland, they made an impressive start on Friday, ending the day just 12.2s from the lead in fourth place. When conditions then became more difficult, Pajari demonstrated a mature approach to focus on gaining valuable experience and cleanly reaching the finish. Pajari will have a further chance to add to his Rally1 experience on the next event at the Central European Rally, and retains a chance of winning the WRC2 championship title at the season-ending event in Japan.

Fuji frustration for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s winning run on home ground came to an end despite a valiant effort in a dramatic 6 Hours of Fuji, the penultimate round of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). An intense team effort, committed driving and bold strategy put the GR010 HYBRIDs in the fight for victory despite their revised power and weight parameters at Fuji, but TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s run of six consecutive home wins ultimately ended in frustration. In front of 65,800 enthusiastic fans, a battling drive from Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa in their #8 GR010 HYBRID looked to have earned a podium until a late penalty dropped them down to 10th place. The #7 GR010 HYBRID of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries had led with two hours to go but were forced to retire due to accident damage. That effectively ends the World Championship challenge of Kamui and Nyck with one race remaining.

CRUEL FATE FOR TOYOTA GAZOO RACING FIGHTBACK Acropolis Rally Greece: Report Sébastien Ogier and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team looked on course to secure second position and strong points from Acropolis Rally Greece until final-stage heartbreak. Ogier was fighting back after losing over two minutes at the end of Friday with a technical issue. On the final morning he stormed into second overall and a good lead of the separate Super Sunday classification with wins in the first two stages of the day. The subsequent Power Stage offered another opportunity to convert that pace into valuable extra points, but early in the rock-strewn test Ogier would sustain a puncture that led him to run wide in a following corner and roll over. He and co-driver Vincent Landais were thankfully unharmed and, after a delay while they made some repairs, were able to get their car through the stage and to the final time control in Lamia – at least securing the 13 points they had banked for finishing Saturday in third position. Sustained hot and dry weather made this one of the roughest and toughest editions of the legendary Acropolis Rally for many years. Elfyn Evans lost significant time with multiple issues during the rally but reached the finish taking points for third in the Super Sunday classification and the Power Stage. Takamoto Katsuta, who stopped with damage on Friday morning, took fifth on Super Sunday and in the Power Stage. After an impressive Rally1 debut with TGR-WRT at Rally Finland, Sami Pajari and Enni Mälkönen returned to their WRC2 campaign in Greece in their GR Yaris Rally2 car run by Printsport and claimed their third win of the season in fourth place overall. They sealed the win in a thrilling dead heat with Robert Virves (Škoda) after sustaining a puncture in the final stage, and now close to within three points of the championship lead. It is the fourth WRC2 win in total for the GR Yaris Rally2 in the last six rallies in what were the most demanding conditions it has faced yet in its debut season.

Terrific Texas fight back from TOYOTA GAZOO Racing TOYOTA GAZOO Racing suffered an agonising near-miss in the Lone Star Le Mans when a harsh penalty denied it victory in round six of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The team bounced back from a difficult qualifying by maximising the performance of its GR010 HYBRIDs and implementing a smart tyre strategy – combined with flat-out driving, fast pit stops and a united team effort – to fight for victory. Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries fought through the field with a perfect performance and looked set to win. However, a late penalty for a yellow flag incident changed race result and left the #7 GR010 HYBRID crew second. World Champions Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa had been set for a top-six finish in the #8 GR010 HYBRID after a similarly strong performance but suffered an incident in the fifth hour and they finished 15th. Despite the frustration, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing nevertheless moves into the lead of the manufacturers’ World Championship heading into its home race, the 6 Hours of Fuji, on 15 September, with an 11-point advantage over Porsche.
