🚧 New Publication 🧠🌳 From Car-Dependent to Public Space Enthusiasts: How can a typology of attitudes help to understand social acceptance of street space reallocation projects? The open-access article by Julia Schreibmüller, Simone Aumann, Sebastian Preiß, and Julia Kinigadner just published in Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives Elsevier explores explanatory factors of attitudes towards the transformation of urban streets - a key element for advancing sustainable urban mobility and livability. Drawing from in-depth interviews and guided conversations in two Munich neighborhoods, we developed a typology, resulting in seven types of attitudes: 🚲 The Car-Independent – happily mobile with alternative transport modes 🚗 The Car-Dependent – reliant on car use and on-street parking 🌳 The Tree Advocates – prioritizing greenery and climate adaptation 🫶 The Public Space Enthusiasts – seeking space to meet, play, and connect 🔇 The Noise Sensitive – valuing peace and quiet above all ♻️ The Change Supporters – actively advocating for climate-conscious mobility 🛑 The Status-Quo Satisfied – content with the current car-centric setup each revealing unique needs, fears, and preferences regarding public space and mobility. Our findings highlight: 🔹 that green infrastructure and shared mobility hubs increase acceptance for most types 🔹 how the transformed public spaces and new uses as well as distributional fairness are perceived differently among the types and influence acceptance 🔹 the cross-type importance of targeted communication and co-creation to satisfy divergent needs This research is part of the “aqt” project within the MCube - Munich Cluster for the future of Mobility in Metropolitan Regions, funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research. 📖 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/daXt4rsa #StreetExperiments #MobilityTransition #PublicSpace #UrbanTransformation #MobilityResearch #15MinuteCity #UrbanPlanning #TransportPolicy

🌍🚶♂️🚴♀️ I had an amazing time at the Empowering Urban Transitions: Accessibility by Proximity in the 15-Minute City symposium hosted by TUM Accessibility Planning. So many great ideas and conversations about creating better cities for people! Highlights for me included Marco Te Brömmelstroet’s powerful talk on the limits of infinite infrastructure growth on a finite planet, and the insights from Carlos Moreno and Catherine Arod-Gall on turning the 15-Minute City into reality in #Paris. Truly inspiring work! There were so many inspiring topics and concepts to bring into my new role at Internationale Bauausstellung (IBA) Metropolregion München. Bauausstellung. Huge thanks to George Liu PhD and the TUM Chair of Urban Structure and Transport Planning team for organizing this event. It was also so nice to reconnect with former colleagues.🌟 #15MinuteCity #UrbanMobility #Sustainability Fotocredit Martha Sainsbury

Last week I has honored to present at yet another absolutely extraordinary event by TUM Accessibility Planning, the Symposium on Empowering Urban Transitions: Accessibility by Proximity in the 15-Minute City (March 26, 2025). From the deeply thought provoking presentations and highly stimulating discussions I highlight the clear evidence on loss of proximity brought to us by Thomas Straatemeier, the extraordinary idea of proximity as a commons by Enrica Papa, the end of the road (or is it just a turn we should not miss?) by Marco Te Brömmelstroet, and the idea of Proxilience by Carlos Moreno and Catherine Arod-Gall, amongst many others (Benjamin Büttner,Maximilian Jäger, George Liu PhD, Derek Halden, Yusak Susilo, Simon Battisti). The sessions were punctuated by short extracts for the amazing book by Antonio Ferreira, "Mobilities in a Turbulent Era". This amazing outline was brought together and brilliantly moderated by Benjamin Büttner and his team @TUM Accessibility Planning. My intervention developed a short reflection on a research agenda for Proximity-centred Accessibility futures (which you can find summarized in one of the figures attached). This symposium was the perfect setting to kick of the #UNLOCK15 project supported by Driving Urban Transitions Partnership, coordinated by Benjamin Büttner. #15MinuteCity #Placemaking #UrbanFutures #UNLOCK15 📸by Martha Sainsbury

💜 Walking the Talk: Women Leading the Future of Mobility 💜 A huge congratulations to Dr. Ulrike Jehle on the successful defense of her PhD thesis on "User-specific walking accessibility. Addressing the mismatch between calculated and perceived walking accessibility measures" on 12 February! 🎓 Ulrike’s research sheds light on the critical gap between technical accessibility measures and how people actually perceive walkability—an essential step toward more inclusive and user-centered mobility planning. Her PhD was co-supervised by Prof. Gebhard Wulfhorst and Prof. Frank Witlox, with Prof. Klaus Bogenberger chairing the examination. Beyond academia, Ulrike has already made a remarkable impact: she co-founded Plan4Better with Dr. Elias Pajares and Majk Shkurti bringing cutting-edge accessibility tools to planners. Now, she embarks on an exciting new chapter, joining the Mobility Department of the Landeshauptstadt München to implement walking policies that make our hometown Munich more walkable and livable. On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate Ulrike’s achievements and the contributions of women driving change in urban mobility. Wishing her all the best on this new journey! 📚 Read her insightful research here: 🔗Ulrike Jehle, Cara Coetzee, Benjamin Büttner, Elias Pajares & Gebhard Wulfhorst (2022): Connecting people and places: Analysis of perceived pedestrian accessibility to railway stations by Bavarian case studies. https://lnkd.in/eBG-mKtb 🔗Louis Merlin & Ulrike Jehle (2023): Global interest in walking accessibility: a scoping review. https://lnkd.in/eMcBV9JR 🔗Ulrike Jehle, María Teresa Baquero Larriva, Mahtab BaghaiePoor & Benjamin Büttner (2024): How does pedestrian accessibility vary for different people?
