Today, I'm back in Hamburg after attending the inspiring 2024 Global Lifelong Learning Summit: "Human Flourishing in an Age of AI" in Singapore. At the summit, I had the pleasure of addressing the critical issue of "Bridging the Grey Digital Divide" in the session 'from Digital Divide to Digital Dividends' chaired by UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. This important topic, which significantly affects the daily lives of older adults, has yet to receive the policy attention it truly deserves. I was deeply encouraged by the active response from expert colleagues at the conference, whose constructive feedback further motivated my continued efforts in the field of lifelong learning for older adults at UIL. In my presentation, I highlighted the profound consequences of the grey digital divide and proposed effective strategies to address it. A key focus was the importance of adopting a needs-based approach for digital learning programs for older adults, drawing insights from educational gerontology. The goal is to create flexible and accommodating learning experiences that account for the diverse backgrounds and learning paces of older participants. The presentation concluded with a central message: "Lifelong learning is about placing people at the center of the process and ensuring that everyone can thrive, regardless of where they start." I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr Daniel Baril, Director General of the Canadian Institute for Cooperation in Adult Education (ICÉA) and Chair of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning Governing Board, for kindly chairing the UIL session, as well as to the other two speakers: Ms Isabel Segovia Ospina, Minister of Education for Bogotá, Colombia, and Mr Pascal Paschoud, Director of Formation Continue UNIL-EPFL, Switzerland. I am also deeply grateful to colleagues at Institute for Adult Learning Singapore for organizing such a remarkable event and for the opportunity to connect with so many dedicated experts working tirelessly in the field of lifelong learning.
