Hydrogen is a true all-rounder among the elements. For its many applications in its various forms, especially as an energy carrier, H2 must be properly stored. Various methods are available for this purpose. These include, for example, mechanical methods such as the use of high pressure and low temperatures or the use of chemical compounds that release H2 on demand. In the following, we will briefly discuss the most common ones: - compressed hydrogen storage Here, hydrogen gas is stored under pressure to increase the storage density. Compressed hydrogen is used for hydrogen refueling systems in vehicles, such as heavy commercial vehicles. Here, 350 or 700 bar is stored in type IV tanks. This technology ensures that a large amount of H2 is kept safely in a small space in a relatively light container. Hydrogen is liquified by lowering its temperature to -253 °C, similar to liquified natural gas. Pressure is not a problem for the tanks here. However, care must be taken to thermally insulate the tank and pipes. - chemical hydrogen storage H2 can be converted into another substance through a chemical reaction, which can be stored and transported at room temperature without pressure, for example. The reverse reaction takes place during use. Yes, trucks have become more efficient in terms of engines, exhaust technologies and better fuel quality. Since 1995, kilometer-related direct emissions of the greenhouse gas CO₂ from trucks have fallen by 8.4%. However, because more trucks are on the road, total direct CO₂ emissions in road freight transport are now 21% higher than in 1995, because - truck mileage increased from 47.8 billion kilometers in 1995 to 63.2 billion kilometers in 2022. - emissions per kilometer were partially offset due to the increase in mileage - the reduction in CO2 emissions was even more than compensated for This leads to the conclusion that alternative drive systems are needed to make the increasing number of kilometers driven by heavy commercial vehicles harmless. We realize this and have pooled our know-how and experience to develop the Voith Plug & Drive H2 Storage System.
