With little rain, extensive pine forests and light sandy soils, Brandenburg is the federal state with the highest risk of forest fires. Just like in many other countries in Europe. 2023 was a record-breaking year with the biggest fire of all time in Europe, one of the worst forest fire seasons in the EU. In the EU, more than half a million hectares were destroyed by forest fires in 2023. The EU research center JRC warns that the situation could get worse in the future. Thanks to a monitoring system, the forest fire season in Brandenburg has been relatively mild so far. The forest fire early detection system in Brandenburg detects clouds of smoke. And this is exactly where our impact startup Yamakoe comes into play. yamakoe detects fires rapidly with its cheap solar-powered IoT sensor using air analysis and can even detect human presence and help with evacuation strategies.
