⏱ Countdown to the European Commissioner #hearings... Starting next week, the European Parliament will scrutinise the candidates for European Commissioners. A lot hangs on these individuals and their remits - what they implement and how in the next 5 years will shape Europe for decades to come. All Commissioners need to take a long-term perspective. We'll be following all the hearings to hear what the candidates have to say on actions and investments for #FutureGenerations. We are especially curious about the new remit responsible for #IntergenerationalFairness and how Glenn Micallef intends to embed long-term thinking in the next European Commission.

New economic thinking in public policy
Info
In ancient Greek, 'Zoe' means life or the good life. At ZOE, we work towards enabling a good life for all within planetary boundaries. We envision an economy that enables humanity to live a good life in harmony with nature. One that enables participation, inclusion, and supports natural regeneration. Everyone should have access to the fruits of global prosperity, as part of a world where people contribute to each other’s dignity and wellbeing. We apply new economic thinking to public policy, to co-create the transformation of our economic system towards this vision. We adopt a systemic perspective to develop new ideas that put the needs of people and the health of the planet at the core of economic policy. Listening with empathy to key decision-makers, we co-create, explore, and seek to understand long-term solutions for the transformation of our economies. Connecting with multiple stakeholders at the interface between new economic thinking and public policy, we build policies that provide for and protect people, society, and the planet.

This week our colleague Christiny Miller has been at the OECD - OCDE Global Forum in Milan from where she shares her insights on ‘Building Trust and #ReinforcingDemocracy’. As we look beyond 2024—the largest election year in history—2025 marks a critical year for democratic governance. With many newly elected governments in place, the opportunities for institutional reforms are significant. Dialogue about how to address declining trust in public institutions and the rise of polarisation is essential to drive the reforms our democracies need. In this blog Christiny emphasises the need for governments to manage trade-offs and highlights the significance of citizen’s participation in the decision-making process: “Participation exercises should not be mere performative box-ticking; they must lead to tangible impacts on policy.". ✏️ Check out Christiny's new blog for her reflections from the OECD Forum and on how we can shift from box-ticking to impact 👉 https://lnkd.in/d4N7h-Zf . #Governance #OECD #Democracy

Unlocking regional potential can be crucial to drive Europe’s long-term #competitiveness and industrial modernisation. Fragmentation is one of the biggest challenges Europe faces in maintaining its competitive edge. 🔑 To succeed, Europe needs a unified approach—one that harnesses the strengths and potential of all its regions, preparing them to be fit for the future. Regions like South-East and North-East #Romania, Andalucía #Spain, Małopolskie #Poland, Dél-Alföld #Hungary and Sicilia #Italy to name a few... This #EURegionsWeek is the ideal time🔔 to talk about how to unlock regional potential... 🔗Our four key reasons why a unified approach is essential 👉 https://lnkd.in/dscG4Pzp #IndustrialPolicy European Committee of the Regions

🚨 NEW WISE Horizons Global Report: This latest report deepens our understanding of the past and the future through a global historical analysis of sustainable and inclusive #Wellbeing, with deep-dives for #Africa, #China, the #EU and #US. Notably, it links wellbeing outcomes to six key drivers: economy, technology, globalisation, demography, nature, and institutions. Some key insights from the report: 📈While human wellbeing has improved globally, we face increasing conflicts, democratic decline and growing polarization that put wellbeing at #Risk. 🏛️The EU and other institutions need broader economic perspectives and modernised structures to safeguard inclusive and sustainable wellbeing. Strengthening institutional arrangements can bridge the gap between people and politics, driving more effective policymaking for continued social progress. Read the report for more recommendations on how our institutions can work towards implementing wellbeing for all 🌱 👇 . ----- A heartfelt thank you to all the collaborators Leiden University Paris School of Economics World Inequality Lab Tsinghua University and Centre of Applied Research!
Our new Report is out: 𝐀 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 Are we merely numbers in a system that measures our worth by what we produce and consume? What about our quality of life—our health, education, social connections, and the impact of inequalities and environmental degradation? Whether talking about progress of the past centuries or the decades to come, the story is often told through the narrow lens of GDP. However, this view is limited. If we want to transition to a world where both people and planet thrive, it is time to move from an economic lens to a broader lens, focusing on sustainable and inclusive wellbeing. The WISE Global report carries us through a comprehensive historical analysis of the main drivers of development by: 🌍 providing an overview on #Global trends, and zooming in on different world regions - #Africa, #China, #EU and #US 🔍 using a novel wellbeing-lens as a theoretical and empirical foundation. 📚 expanding the narrow lens on economic development (GDP), deepening our understanding of our past and future by looking at average wellbeing (#wellbeing), inequalities in wellbeing (#inclusion) and future wellbeing (#sustainability) 🔑 looking at six key drivers shaping our future: #Technology, #Economy, #Globalisation, #Population, #Nature, and #Institutions. With a new European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Europe can lead by example in placing #FutureGenerations at the heart of policymaking. After the United Nations Summit of the Future #SofT, the call to action📢 for future generations is louder than ever. Europe’s new five-year cycle is the perfect moment to reimagine governance for the long-term, embracing a long-term mindset and adapting to the complexities of an uncertain world. The best part? We don’t need to start from scratch. The EU can learn from models like Wales’ Well-being of Future Generations Act and others around the globe🌍. Ahead of the Summit of the Future our Managing Director Elizabeth Dirth met other people working to embed a long-term perspective in decision-making at an event hosted by The Office of the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales 💬"For so many regions and countries, this is the beginning of a journey, this is a catalyst", she said. #FutureGenerations #IntergenerationalFairness #SustainableGovernance #SummitoftheFuture Derek Walker Sophie Howe Inés Yábar Ledama Olekina Future of Climate Cooperation Kevin Eustatia - Palm Ishaan Shah

In love with problems and how to solve them, currently: Creating an economy for people and the planet, not the other way round @ ZOE
#FeelingProud ZOE Institute for Future-fit Economies is one of the research organisations named in Mario Draghi’s recent report on the Future of EU Competitiveness – a report set to shape EU industrial policy and economic policy for years to come. At the same time, when I look at the pages of acknowledgements, I wish there were more fresh voices like ours. It is very much a list of incumbents. I don’t see many champions of clean industry, nor regional representatives – which could help explain why the potential of currently left behind EU regions to contribute to competitiveness continues to be overlooked. Europe needs new solutions to the challenges we face. Listening to the same old actors is unlikely to lead to different answers. #draghi #competitiveness #industrialpolicy #neweconomics

🌿 Yesterday we busted the myth 'Stability can only be guaranteed when the economy is growing', at the #NetworkNature Annual Event NetworkNature EU Rather, stability cannot be guaranteed when the economy overshoots #PlanetaryBoundaries 🌍 and doesn’t meet people’s basic needs. In the panel 'The value of nature: Economy for and with nature', our colleague Lydia Korinek put forward a new compass for 21st century economic policy 🧭. ‘There are risks with a system that relies on making the pie🍰 forever bigger and bigger,’ as Lydia pointed out. A new compass puts economic policymaking at the service of environmental and social goals – to deliver a minimum social foundation and a good life for all in a healthy environment. 💡Debunked! #Resilience and stability come from prioritising people and the planet.
