New economic thinking in public policy

Info

In ancient Greek, 'Zoe' means life or the good life. At ZOE, we work towards enabling a good life for all within planetary boundaries. We envision an economy that enables humanity to live a good life in harmony with nature. One that enables participation, inclusion, and supports natural regeneration. Everyone should have access to the fruits of global prosperity, as part of a world where people contribute to each other’s dignity and wellbeing. We apply new economic thinking to public policy, to co-create the transformation of our economic system towards this vision. We adopt a systemic perspective to develop new ideas that put the needs of people and the health of the planet at the core of economic policy. Listening with empathy to key decision-makers, we co-create, explore, and seek to understand long-term solutions for the transformation of our economies. Connecting with multiple stakeholders at the interface between new economic thinking and public policy, we build policies that provide for and protect people, society, and the planet.

  • What is an emergency? In what cases can ‘political imperative’ be used to fast-track policy files? And, is the use of emergency decision-making tools the new norm? In the context of a drive for 'efficiency' in government around the World, and the #EU #Omnibus packages, our governance team has written about the need for evidence-based, stakeholder-informed, rapid-response policymaking. #PolicyCycle

Policy Consultant at ZOE Institute for Future-fit Economies

I am back at work after a refreshing holiday in Kenya where I tried not to think about work or the state of the world for a few weeks ☀️ Unfortunately that’s not easy to do because 1– I am addicted to twitter (and yes, I’m still calling it that) 2– There was a Trump supporter on my safari who told me how great it is that “they are making everything so much more efficient now”. The day before I set off on my trip, the EU also published some of its own proposals for “simplification”—the EU’s chosen branding for its own efforts at efficiency—called the #Omnibus packages. We at ZOE Institute for Future-fit Economies wrote a blog about the Omnibus packages, the fast-track process used to create them, and the risks this brings. We also share how some of our proposals from our policy cycle 2.0 can help policymakers work fast in a crisis without skipping over important aspects of effective governance. But economic and deep-rooted barriers prevent it from flowing towards a sustainable economy.   Our new Policy Toolbox provides a structured approach to overcoming barriers on multiple levels.   It addresses explicit real-world barriers, like a lack of skilled workers or infrastructure gaps. As well as deeper-rooted implicit barriers that reinforce the status quo. These include the prevalence of short-term thinking and risk perceptions.   So far it includes more than 1️⃣5️⃣0️⃣ policy tools.   We developed our methodology based on extensive research and interviews to understand the barriers to mobilising and redirecting financial flows.   ▶️ WATCH: We presented the Toolbox and the thinking behind it in a recent webinar: https://lnkd.in/etAinvv8 🔧 EXPLORE: We invite you to explore the Toolbox and filter the policy tools by specific barriers and policy goals: https://lnkd.in/e6QhPSmm   #SystemsChange #PrivateFinance #SustainableEconomy

For this, public policy often focuses on financial regulation. Research and stakeholder interviews tell us that this is necessary but not sufficient: ➡️ 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵. Many companies struggle to turn funding into viable business cases due to other real-world obstacles like the lack of skilled workers or infrastructure gaps.  ➡️ 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗼. In addition to explicit barriers, deeper-rooted semi-explicit and implicit barriers need to be addressed to overcome issues like short-term thinking or risk perceptions.  Our Policy Toolbox includes over 1️⃣5️⃣0️⃣ policy tools. It provides a structured approach to overcoming explicit, semi-explicit and implicit investment barriers.  You can use the filters to find relevant tools depending on specific barriers and policy goals. • 🗨️ The decision taken yesterday by the Bundestag in #Germany to reform the constitutional "debt brake" is historic.    The move to loosen decades of strict borrowing rules does represent a tectonic shift, a turning point, a watershed moment and all the other hyperbolic phrases being used about it.    Reform was necessary. Co-founder ZOE-Institute for Future-fit-Economies

Time for a new chapter! 🚀 After more than seven years, my journey with ZOE Institute for Future-fit Economies is coming to an end. I have decided to move on. 🌟 As Co-Founder & Senior Policy Consultant, I had the privilege of shaping the organization's core values and developing and nurturing strong and trustful partnerships with the European Commission, the European Parliament, and leading research and civil society institutions. 🙏 I am incredibly grateful for what we have achieved, bringing new economic thinking to the European stage and creating an organization rooted in collaboration, participation and empathy. It is inspiring to see so many dedicated people inside and outside the European Commission, working to make the world a better (and measurable 😊) place. 💡 Building bridges between research, policy & civil society has always been my passion – making complex economic concepts actionable for policymakers and ensuring research truly serves societal needs. ❤ I leave with a deep appreciation of the trustful and meaningful relationships I have built over the years. Meeting and working alongside visionary and courageous changemakers, whether in our consortia, within ZOE, or across European institutions — has been an absolute privilege. What’s next? ✨ 🏓 A well-deserved break to reflect, recharge, and explore new opportunities at the intersection of policy, research & transformation. 🌍 I am still deeply committed to advancing new economic thinking, debates & bold visions for a fairer, more sustainable economy. 🤝 Let’s stay connected #Future-fitEconomies #farewell #NewBeginnings #EconomicTransformation #ResearchToPolicy MAPS (Models, Assessment, and Policies for Sustainability), Partners for a New Economy, The Club of Rome, Post Growth Institute, Jonathan Barth, Jakob Hafele, Katy Wiese (she, her), Katherine Trebeck, Lydia Korinek, Lukas Bertram, NELA.
