Laser Powder Bed Fusion goes #quantum... Besides industrial applications in #additivemanufacturing, we at the Laser Powder Bed Fusion department at Fraunhofer ILT support our in-house colleagues with design and manufacturing customized components for applications in quantum technology. Heat sink for quantum frequency converters: In quantum technology applications, #frequencyconverters are used to achieve long distance #quantumcommunication. In these applications thermal control is crucial to ensure high-stability. For this purpose a prototype heat sink was developed and adapted using the design freedom of #additivemanufacturing. Innovative design features such as lattice structures were used on the basis of thermal simulations and novel structural elements were developed that allow a local adjustment of the thermal behavior. The Laser Powder Bed Fusion Department is always happy to support with #additivemanufacturing for novel applications. Laser-based additive manufacturing from Fraunhofer ILT as a key technology for fusion energy! Two new BMBF-funded projects for fusion research kicked off right before Christmas: In the DURABLE project, a consortium of 10 partners led by Fraunhofer ILT is researching the redesign of plasma-facing components for laser inertial fusion and magnetic confinement fusion powerplants. Fraunhofer ILT’s laser-based additive manufacturing processes Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) and (Extreme High-Speed) Laser Metal Deposition (LMD/EHLA) allow fundamentally new designs for plasma-facing components in challenging material combinations. The project results will provide engineers with a fundamentally new solution space for eliminating the main failure mechanisms of plasma-facing components. By bringing together leading research institutions and industrial companies as well as SMEs, a fast industrial implementation of the developed solutions is pursued: Forschungszentrum Jülich, Access e.V., H.C. Starck Tungsten Powders, AMCM GmbH, toolcraft AG, ModuleWorks, REUTER TECHNOLOGIE GmbH, RI Research Instruments GmbH, Gauss Fusion, Fraunhofer ILT Additionally, Fraunhofer ILT is part of the IFE-Targetry-Hub project of 15 partners led by Focused Energy Inc.. The project aims to bring production of targets for inertial fusion to an industrial level. Fraunhofer ILT is developing cutting-edge additive manufacturing processes with innovative photopolymer materials to manufacture these critical components with unprecedented precision and efficiency. What happens when #EHLA is combined with a simultaneous machining process? Find out in our latest publication in the Journal of Laser Applications! DOI: 10.2351/7.0001567 Within the scope of this work, we researched the fundamentals of our newly developed #SMaC process as a combination of EHLA and turning. We investigated aspects such as geometric accuracy and surface quality of coatings produced using the combined process and compared them to sequential processing. The findings suggest a number of advantages for simultaneous processing regarding surface roughness and tool wear. The results of this work will be presented at this year's #ICALEO on November 4th in Hollywood, CA.
