Three contracts for major equipment packages for the bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project, have been awarded by Hydrasun. This facility is a scalable green hydrogen production, storage, and distribution facility which runs on renewable energy. It is due to be delivered by bp and Aberdeen City Council who will be operating through a joint venture. Last year I attended Hydrogen Technology Expo Europe in Hamburg, a great venue, with engaging sessions. However, this year I’m hoping to take it one step further and share industry insights with my own session, Unlocking Talent in Hydrogen Technology. Last week I submitted a speaking proposal for #HTE2025 following recent discussions with a number of connections I met whilst chairing a panel session at the Polymers in Hydrogen & CCUS event last December. In my submission I highlighted that by 2030 there will be 1 million jobs In Hydrogen across Europe, with 5.4 million by 2050. This growth underscores the urgent need to bridge educational gaps, expand talent pools and leverage cutting-edge tools to attract top-tier professionals with transferable skills. Without the right people, progress stall. Talent is arguably the most important part of the industry, but Hydrogen projects face a common challenge: skills scarcity, exacerbated by the retirement of 3.3 million skilled workers across Europe over the next 5 years, plus competition from projects vying from similar expertise requires a combination of innovation, collaboration and an overhaul to traditional attraction methods. BASF’s Ludwigshafen site recently welcomed Germany’s largest proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser, which is now in operation. The electrolyser is designed to produce zero-carbon hydrogen by including a connected load of fifty-four megawatts, along with one metric ton of this substantial chemical feedstock to the main plant hourly.
